Differences between white and green tea
White tea vs green tea:
Extracted from the plant camellia sinesis and put through an extensive process of drying and rolling, which is then, brewed in hot water, tea remains to be one of the most popular drinks of nations worldwide even today. It is considered to be healthy and tea is known even to possess therapeutic properties. Tea comes in several varieties, two of which are known as white and green tea.
What is white tea?
White tea leaves are plucked from the bush before they have the chance to open up fully at the very early stages itself when the buds are still covered in fine, white hairs which gives these leaves its white color. White tea is not fermented at all and undergoes very little or in other words, much gentler treatment because of which white tea has a milder, purer taste when compared with other teas.
What is green tea?
Although green tea too is extracted from the same tea plant, camellia sinesis which is native to Asia, it goes through a different process of preparation than other teas. The young leaves and the shoot of the plant are handpicked and sorted and after this, the leaves are immediately steamed or baked not leaving the leaves to wither away as is the usual way. This process only allows the leaves to go through a part of the oxidization process which tea planters refer to as fermentation which allows the green tea leaves to retain their green color. Green tea is considered to be highly therapeutic and is said to have antimicrobial, antimutagenic and antioxidant properties which are called polyphenols. Antioxidants are best described as substances that scavenge free radicals which damage compounds in the body that alter cells, tamper with DNA and even cause cell death. It is also said to be able to reduce the risk of cancer and other fatal diseases, lower cholesterol levels, help prevent dental cavities and also, treat stomach related problems such as diarrhea and vomiting.
What is the difference between green and white tea?
Green tea and white tea are both obtained from the same plant, camellia sinesis which is native to Asia. However, white tea is made out of the very young leaves that are plucked before they get a chance to open out which are still covered in white hairs and still tender in texture at the time of picking. Green tea on the other hand, is made from the upper leaves of the bush which are much older than the white tea leaves. The two teas differ in terms of taste as well. While green tea tends to have an earthier, leafy sort of flavor, white tea has a light, pure sort of flavor which is rather gentle and sweet on the taste buds.
White tea is only harvested once a year while green tea can be harvested several times of the year. Because of this factor, white tea tends to be much more expensive than green tea which is found more abundantly in the market than white tea. Both white and green teas are known to be quite high in antioxidants which help keep our immune systems up to standard. And yet, it has been proved that a cup of white tea contains three times the amount of nutrients that can be obtained from a cup of green tea and this is due to the fact that early buds of the bush are known to preserve all the nutrients and also because white tea is only very mildly processed, preserving all their natural nutrients intact.
