Difference between works cited and bibliography

Works cited vs bibliography:

Submitting an assignment, a thesis or a research paper is a must for any student who is pursuing his or her higher studies. In submitting these papers, one must adhere to certain guidelines and rules which are compulsory to be followed. The mentioning of works cited and bibliography are two such documents that a student is required to submit with one’s research paper or thesis as a document which claims the many sources that one has utilized in fabricating the final product. Works cited and bibliography tend to be rather confusing to many as they contain similar contents and are thus prone to confuse people. However, these are two different documents which must be submitted for different purposes.

What is works cited?

Sometimes also called as reference, work cited is an alphabetical list of works which have been cited, or works to which the paper has made reference. Works cited in typically used when using the MLA format (Modern Language Association) while reference is the word that is used in the APA style (American Psychological Association). The works cited page is usually inserted as the last page of a document and it usually begins from a fresh page.

What is bibliography?
Bibliography refers to an alphabetical list of all the material used including books, magazines, newspaper articles, TV programs, radio programs and the like that one has used in the course of one’s study. This is given as proof that the ideas presented in the document are not his or her own. A bibliography provides as proof that the ideas that had been presented in the paper had been derived from and supported by other more reliable sources such as books and articles from experts on the subjects and etc.

What is the difference between bibliography and works cited?

Both bibliography and works cited are specific lists that are alphabetically arranged of what one has used as resources in composing an essay, a research paper or a thesis. Both bibliography and works cited are included at the end of the document, often as its last page and they both begin afresh on a fresh page. In this list, names of books, magazines, its authors, publishers and even translators are cited which provides as proof that the author of the research has conducted sufficient research upon the subject prior and during the writing of the document.

However, works cited is also a sort of a bibliography. Sometimes, in order to support an argument, one may need to directly quote or paraphrase certain phrases, dialogues or paragraphs from other sources. These are the sources that must be mentioned in the works cited. Bibliography on the other hand, submits all the resources, all the research material that one has used during the writing of the article regardless of whether the work has been quoted, paraphrased or merely read up on. This information may not have been used directly in the writing of the academic paper but nevertheless, they must be provided as proof of the extensive research that the author of the paper has done regarding the subject or to prove the fact that the author has retrieved information from reliable sources instead of presenting mere conjectures of his or her own. As a result, the works cited list tends to be much shorter than the bibliography list which tends to go on for longer.

Bibliography and works cited are essential components that must be included according to popular research formats such as MLA or APA. However, works cited is not listed numerically whereas bibliography is typically numbered. The terms ‘bibliography’ and ‘works cited’ must be centered at the top of a fresh page after which the list of referenced must follow.

Summary

  • Bibliography and works cited follow certain reference styles.
  • Works cited mentions the work from which has been quoted or paraphrased whereas bibliography includes all the resources that has been used directly or indirectly during the writing of the academic paper, regardless of whether they have been quoted or merely researched upon.
  • Bibliography is a longer list than works cited.
  • Both bibliography and works cited are listed alphabetically.
  • Works cited should not be numbered whereas bibliography requires numbering.
