In an age where healthy food is promoted across the globe, the words whole wheat and whole grain are two terms which are often heard used in the market. One is constantly on a hunt for whole wheat or whole grain food whereas some people even believe that both these terms stand for the one and the same. However, while both whole wheat and whole grain are deemed as very similar in nature, they do possess some differences which manifest themselves through many aspects from time to time.
What is whole wheat?
Whole wheat is obtained through a refining process where the whole grain is usually mashed to produce flour. This is a rather heavy product which naturally includes the endosperm of the grain while the bran and the germ are removed. However, whole wheat is not a much preferred flour when it comes to baking as the heaviness of the flour stops the dough from rising which is an essential process that is expected in baking.

Whole grain contains cereal germ, endosperm, and bran and this substance is unrefined. Because of the fact that whole grain does not go through a refining process, it retains all of the fiber, iron and B vitamins that the nature originally bestowed upon whole grain.
What is the difference between whole grain and whole wheat?
Whole wheat and whole grain look so much alike and therefore, it is extremely difficult to tell them apart. However, the difference between them can be sensed in the taste that they possess. Whole grain tends to taste much richer and fuller in contrast to the much milder taste of the whole wheat. Also, whole grain tends to be denser in texture than whole wheat whereas whole wheat tends to be much lighter in texture than whole grain.
The difference between whole wheat and whole grain is the fact that whole wheat goes through a refining process whereas whole grain does not go through such a process. Therefore, while whole grain retains all parts of the cereal including the bran, the germ and the endosperm, whole wheat only contains the endosperm of the cereal as bran and the germ are removed during the refining process. Because of the fact that the whole grain is not refined, it is considered as containing more nutrients than whole wheat which loses much of its nutritious parts in the removal of bran and germ. While both whole wheat and whole grain have their own health benefits, whole grain retains all of its fiber, iron, calcium and vitamins, whereas whole wheat only retains half of the above benefits that the whole grain bestows upon its consumers.
Whole grain tends to be more filling and satisfying than whole wheat and therefore, it is ideal for weight watchers of all ages and sizes. Another factor why whole grain is preferred by weight watchers is that it is much lower in fat content than whole wheat. Whole grain is also known to be the more beneficial type for diabetic patients as refined grains are known to contribute towards not only weight gain but also contribute towards an increased risk of insulin resistance. It has been proven scientifically that whole grains are capable of lowering the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes which is otherwise known as adult onset Diabetes.
Whole wheat tends to have a longer shelf life than whole grain because of its refined nature which gets rid of most of the oils contained in it in the form of bran and germ. However, whole grain costs slightly more than whole wheat due to its popularity.
