Not everybody would notice the very slight difference that exists between white cake and vanilla cake as most people are more concerned with the taste of the cakes rather than obsessing about their color. However, both white cake and vanilla cake are two cakes that are bound to send many mouths slobbering despite the slight differences that they carry within their recipes.
About white cake
White cake is referred to as the essential wedding cake because of its pure whiteness. It is an essential part of the traditional, all-white wedding cake. What sets it apart from other cake recipes is that it does not use egg yolks in order to retain the purity of its whiteness.
About vanilla cake
Vanilla cake is characteristic of its yellowish nature and is often used for birthday cakes and other types of cakes which are commonly used on many occasions. Vanilla cake gains its name due to its use of vanilla which gives the cake its distinct vanilla taste which is preferred by many.
What is the difference between vanilla cake and white cake?
The difference between a vanilla cake and a white cake is extremely hard to recognize, especially when loaded with many layers of frosting on top. However, experienced bakers and cake makers would be well aware of the differences between the two as vanilla cake and white cake are sometimes made for very specific purposes.
The main difference lies in the color of these two cakes. White cake is white in color whereas the vanilla cake carries a distinct yellowness in its midst. However, white cake is referred to as the wedding cake as it is the white cake that is preferred to be used for the traditional all-white wedding cake due to its pure whiteness. On the other hand, vanilla cake is used widely for making birthday cakes, anniversary cakes and other types of cakes which do not require any sort of color specification. Vanilla cake uses copious amounts of vanilla whereas white cake is rather cautious about the amount of vanilla it uses so as not to affect its color.
The ingredients which are used in both white and vanilla cakes are almost identical as both uses flour, milk, butter, baking powder and sugar. The only difference between the two is while vanilla cake uses whole eggs including the yolk, white cake only uses egg whites in its recipe. Adding the egg yolk would give the cake a yellowish tinge and therefore, in order to retain the whiteness of the white cake, egg yolks are not added in the white cake mixture.
Even though the difference between these two types of cake is not very noticeable for many in the taste of the two cakes, there is however, a slight difference between the flavors which some people, especially children tend to notice. Vanilla cake tends to be much creamier and sweeter than white cakes which tend to be slightly bland in comparison to vanilla cake which is packed full of flavor. Therefore, children tend to prefer vanilla cake over white cake because of which vanilla cakes are widely used in children’s birthday parties and so on.
Because of the absence of egg yolks, white cake tends to be lower in calories than vanilla cake. This however, is made up by copious amounts of frosting that is piled upon the cake and yet, white cake, on its own, is much lower in calories than vanilla cake, which is laden with the calories that comes from using a large amount of egg yolks.
