Difference between water and mineral water

Water vs mineral water:

The importance of water for the existence of all living beings is indisputable. Our planet itself is three thirds covered in water and yet only a very small amount of it is usable for drinking purposes. Drinking water itself is available in many forms such as water, bottled water, mineral water and sparkling water. Thus, this article seeks to identify the differences between water and mineral water for the benefit of many readers who may be quite curious regarding this fact.

What is water?
Water covers about 70% of the world’s crust and it is considered as a chemical substance which bear the chemical formula H2O signifying that a single water molecule contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms which are connected by covalent bonds. Water exists in liquid form at room temperature and yet, it also exists as ice or in a vaporous state such as steam. 96.5% of the planet’s water is found in oceans while 1.7% exists in groundwater, 1.7% in glaciers and 0.001% in the air as vapor or as clouds. Freshwater, which is only of 2.5% of the whole quantity of water that is available on planet earth, exists in the form of ice and groundwater whereas only a meager 0.3% of the freshwater exists in reachable forms such as rivers, lakes, etc. These statistics indicate how rare water is and the importance of preserving this precious liquid which is mandatory in preserving the lives of all living beings. Water is a gift from nature to all beings great and small. Therefore, it is our sole duty to preserve it.

What is mineral water?
Mineral water can refer to water that contains minerals or a form of specially prepared water to which additional minerals have been added to enhance its quality. Some of the minerals which are found in mineral water can be indicated as zinc, iron, calcium and magnesium which exist in varying amounts. Mineral water is obtained from areas which are said to be rich in minerals while certain amounts of minerals too are artificially added to the water which results in the enhancement of the beverage.

What is the difference between mineral water and water?
While it is the same basic chemical formula that pertains to both water and mineral water, there are certain differences which set these two apart. Water does not necessarily contain any minerals. It is obtained from lakes, rivers, wells and some such places without any specification of from where it has been obtained. On the contrary, mineral water contains certain minerals such as zinc, iron, calcium and magnesium in varying amounts. Mineral water is typically obtained from places where the soil is said to be rich in minerals and also, additional minerals are added to water before packaging. It is because of this reason that mineral water is said to be very much beneficial to health than regular water as it contains certain minerals which are essential for maintaining a balanced and a healthy life.

There is a distinct taste difference in regular water and mineral water as well. While mineral water is said to be a daily refresher, certain mineral waters have a somewhat harsh taste while regular water remains tasteless. Furthermore, regular water comes free whereas mineral water comes at a price. Mineral water must be purchased from a store as opposed to natural water which one can obtain for free from natural water sources.

Summary

  • Water does not contain minerals. Mineral water contains minerals.
  • Water is obtained for free. Mineral water must be bought.
  • Mineral water tastes different than regular water which is usually tasteless.
