Difference between volume and capacity
Volume vs Capacity:
Among the many words that are found in everyday speech in relation to mathematics, computers and hardware, volume and capacity are two different words which are frequently confused and interchanged in meaning and usage. Therefore, this article endeavours to clarify the two terms in simple English with a final paragraph describing the differences existing between them. To begin with, the two terms; volume and capacity are terms that describe some kind of object containing some kind of substance in them. Since that is what pops into our minds whenever we hear these two words, they are easily assumed to mean the exact same. But, they are two distinctly different terms and now let us see how.
What is volume?
It is more accurate to say that the word ‘volume’ has several different meanings. The most common definition of the word is the magnitude or intensity of a certain sound. In addition, volume also refers to how much space a three-dimensional object takes up. However, in the always confusing sphere of computers and hardware, the word volume can also refer to a specific data storage device. In this light, some examples of volumes include hard disks, DVD drives, and flash memory drives, such as USB devices. It is common knowledge that computers recognize all these data storage devices as volumes. Generally, all volumes connected to the computer are indicated on desktop by icons: hard drive is indicated by a hard drive icon and a CD is indicated by an icon of a CD. Once you open ‘My Computer’, you will be able to see all the volumes connected to your computer. Moreover, with regard to the three-dimensional size of an object, volume is measured in terms of cubic meters and cubic centimeters as the product has a particular length, width, and height and it can be determined by multiplying the object’s length, width and height.
What is capacity?
In general, capacity means ‘the ability to hold or contain something’. The word is very similar to the word ‘volume’ but definitely different. Capacity can have several different meanings according to the field it is used in. the word is used in many a number of fields such as Mathematics, Biology, Telecommunications, Chemistry, Power Plants, and Computers and Hardware. However, in all these fields, capacity would mean the general ability to hold something. In many cases, the word designates storage. For example, the capacity of a DVD would be about 4 GB, and that means the DVD’s ability to store data. In Mathematics, the capacity of a container is the volume of liquid that can fit inside the container. For example, the capacity of a hot water tank is the volume of water that can fit inside the tank. The capacity of a petrol tank is the volume of petrol that can fit inside the tank. The standard units often used for capacity are the Litre (L or l) and the Millilitre (ml or mL) and it is also measured in terms of Pound, Gallons, and etc. Thus, capacity refers to the potential amount a particular container can hold or absorb a particular substance.
What is the difference between capacity and volume?
As mentioned above, volume and capacity are two terms that are so closely related that they can be often confused as meaning the same. Yet, if you closely observe, you’ll be able to understand that they are different. There are several dissimilarities between the meanings of these two words and one would be the term volume means the three-dimensional space that a particular object takes up where as capacity means how much a particular container or an object can hold or accommodate some substance. To illustrate this fact, let’s consider this simple example. If a bottle has a capacity of 330 ml of water, it means that the bottle can accommodate 330 mililitres of water. Yet, the volume of the bottle could be 400 cubic centimeters of space. Thus, volume and capacity are not the same. Moreover, the measuring units of the two phenomena are also different. While volume is measured in cubic meters and cubic centimeters and can be determined by multiplying an object’s length, width, and height, capacity is measured by Litre, Mililitre, Gallons, and etc. Ultimately, to summarize what has been discussed so far, volume is the three-dimensional space occupied by a particular object whereas capacity refers to the actual amount of substance such as liquid, gas, or even data, which a particular container can hold or accommodate.
