Difference between update and upgrade
Update vs Upgrade:
With the evolution of the world, new concepts, things, and equipment are discovered and to identify and describe those new things, new words are largely added to the vocabulary. Two such words recently added to the language are ‘update’ and ‘upgrade’. They were originated with the evolution of the computer systems. The general meaning of update is ‘to make something up to date or the act of bringing something or someone up to date, or an updated version of something’ while upgrade is generally referred to as ‘raise (something) to a higher standard, in particular improve (equipment or machinery) by adding or replacing components or an act of upgrading something’. Although that is the general case, both words are frequently and extensively associated with computer software. The two words are distinctly different, yet some people still find it hard to make a distinction between the two. Therefore, this article aims to get to the attention of such confused minds by providing brief descriptions concerning the two including a short account of their differences as well.
What is an update?
As introduced above, update is generally associated with computer software and it is the act of making something up to date. In such an event, update, in a broader sense, refer to minor fixes to the core operating system, software or extra packages. Updates are usually security updates or bug fixes. Usually, computers are protected with security guards in order to get the machine protected by harmful viruses to the system. And, in order for the security guard to function properly and accurately, it must be regularly updated. Furthermore, updates in computer software are noted as patches of code that are released in order to deal with certain issues or to activate specific functionalities. Speaking of what might have caused the need for release of an update, it is comprehensible that an update is launched when there are certain issues that are not obvious before the product is launched. That is to say, when a certain product is launched, the manufacturer is met with issues of the product he made once the uses report problems and request for help. That is when the manufacturer tries to modify the current product by fixing the problem with an update. Thereby, the role of an update is to modify the particular product at its current stage. In addition, updates are extremely crucial for the security of the operating system, software or a package. Generally, updates can be obtained for free. When a new update is released, the users are encouraged to download and install it to solve or prevent the problem. That is simply how an update works.
What is an upgrade?
The term ‘upgrade’ is also largely associated with computer operating systems, software, and packages. Upgrade, which is totally different from update, is the act of replacing you product with a newer, and often more advanced version of similar product. In other words, a product is usually created for the first time and it is released, then, with users’ feedback and the development, the manufacturers think of introducing a better version of the same product with higher, more advanced quality. Then, the second version is called an upgrade of the first version. Upgrades are named with numerical values or special names.
Examples : eBuddy version 1.5.0
OperaMini Web Browser version 6.5
OperaMini beta version
Next, speaking of how upgrades are installed in your computer, it must be recorded that most upgrades cannot be downloaded from the internet for free. Yet, some software permit internet downloading of their latest upgrades for free. Skype, Adobe Flash Player, and upgrades of web browsers such as Mozilla Firefox would be good examples for this. Once the upgrade is downloaded and installed on your computer, it completely replaces the older version. That is what software upgrades do. Software upgrades are frequently done than server upgrades. Server upgrades should be avoided as much as possible unless it is absolutely necessary as upgrading servers could cause many issues such as packages from the old version being not been compatible with the new one and vice versa.
What is the difference between upgrade and update?
As you may observe, update and upgrade are two distinctly different terms that are widely used in the field of computing. Though they are similarities in terms of their usage, their role is noticeably different. Among the many differences, the major difference between the two is that an update modifies a current product by fixing errors and other security problems while upgrade totally replaces the older version of a product with its new, advanced version of better quality. Another difference can be seen with the frequency; updates happen a lot more often compared to updates. For instance, a security guard is updated daily while an application like eBuddy Live Messenger could be upgraded when a new upgrade is introduced by the manufacturer. That could take even several months. Further, a necessary aspect about upgrade is addition of new features in order to make it better, more advanced and higher in quality. Yet, an update does not do that; it merely brings the application or software up to date by fixing its persistent problems. Differentiating updates and upgrades in terms of cost, updates are usually free of charge while upgrades are not.
