Difference between Ukrainians and Russians
Ukrainians vs Russians:
The world where we live consists of various countries in which the nationalities are different from one another. Ukrainians and Russians are such nationalities of two countries. Ukrainian is the nationality of the people of Ukraine and Ukrainians are an East Slavic ethnic group native to Ukraine, which is located in the central part of Eastern Europe which has the boarder of black sea in the south, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary in the west, Belarus in the north and Russia in the east. Russian is the nationality of Russia, which is situated too in the central part of Eastern Europe, where the Russians too are a Slavic ethnic group which is native to Russia. It is true that there are a number of similarities between the Ukrainian and the Russian there are several dissimilarities between the two nationalities. Yet, a lot of people still find it difficult to distinguish between the two nationalities and what is meant by being Ukrainian and Russian. Thereby, this article aims to enlighten those of who are yet blind to the distinction between Ukrainians and Russians by providing brief descriptions regarding the two including a short account of their differences.
Who are Ukrainians?
Ukrainians are an East Slavic ethnic group native to Ukraine and it is the sixth-largest nation in Europe. The word Ukrainian could necessarily denote different and various meanings such as nationality, language and etc. As nationality the term Ukrainians applies to all its citizens, according to the Ukraine constitution. In other words Ukrainian are the inhabitants of Ukraine. Using as a language, Ukrainian is the only official language and the Ukrainian language starts to spread all over the world in the beginning of 20th century. But this article mainly focuses on the nationality. So according to that Ukrainians are people live in Ukraine, as mentioned earlier. Talking about the unique features of Ukrainians, central and eastern Europe has been influenced to the Ukrainian culture. Orthodox Christianity is the main religion of Ukrainians but, there are also Islam and Judaism.
Who are Russians?
Russians are a Slavic ethnic native to Russia speaking the Russian language. Between the 12th and 16th century, Russians were known as Pomors migrated to northern Russia and settled the White Sea coasts. Also Russians are the most numerous ethnic group in Europe and one of the largest in the world with a population of about 140 million people worldwide. Roughly 116 million ethnic Russians live in Russia who were referred as Great Russians in the 15th century, and about 16 million more live in the neighboring countries. A significant number of Russians, around 4,6 million, live elsewhere in the world, mostly in the Americas and Western Europe, but also in other places of Eastern Europe, Asia and elsewhere. What is the difference between Ukrainians and Russians?
Although Ukrainians and Russians are very similar in their nationality, like China and Thai food but it must be pointed out that they differ from one another in very significant ways. The nationality of the people of Ukraine is Ukrainian and the Russian is the nationality of Russia.
Culture has been influenced by central and eastern Europe due to its geographical location. Over the years it has been influenced by movements such as during the Byzantine Empire and the Renaissance invariably. Today, the country is somewhat culturally divided with the western regions which are influenced by central European and the eastern regions have a significant Russian influence. Also the Ukrainians’ culture has elements of some of the oldest cultures in the world such as Trypillian culture. Russian culture too started from that of East Slavs, who were largely polytheists, and had a specific way of life in the wooden areas of Eastern Europe, but it is extremely unique and various in many aspects. Especially when it comes to literature, classical music, philosophy, cinema, architecture, and painting, all has considerably influenced by the world culture.
The languages of both nationalities are very similar as both Ukrainian and Russians are Slavic Languages. And yet, they are considered as two different languages. Ukrainian is only official state language of Ukraine and it uses a Cyrillic alphabet. Russian is the widely spoken language and most geographically spread language. As well Russian language is a member of Indo-European Languages.
