The grand sphere of communication has long since upgraded itself, what with the forever developing technology of the world seizing the world by storm. Various ways and means through which one can communicate their ideas have been established, making the lives of human being much easier. Twitter and texting are two such modes of communication that have asserted themselves in the world of communication, thus reaching out to more and more people across the globe.
What is Twitter?
Twitter is a social networking site which is known for its micro blogging features and its ability to access and post tweets even through a phone. Twitter is an extremely simple and a hassle free method of posting which does not require much time or effort. Twitter exists somewhere between the worlds of email, blogging and instant messaging and the users get almost immediate responses to tweets and is therefore known to be quite addictive. Twitter is extremely popular between individuals looking for means of promotion such as bloggers, online marketers, entertainers and the like and it acts as a communication stream which has a continuous flow unlike most other network sites.
What is texting?
Texting or text messaging is a method of exchanging brief written messages over a network, between typically two mobile phones or any other device. This method is also known as the Short Message Service (SMS), a term that has been derived from Radio Telegraphy. The messages that can be sent through this service have a set character limit, thereby requiring the users to use acronyms in his or her messages. SMS has another facility referred to as MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) where the user is capable of attaching a photo, a video or a song along with the message. A text message is usually referred to as an “SMS” in most countries of Europe, while it is referred to as “texting” in North America, India, Australia, the Philippines and the United Kingdom. Texting is known as “TMS” or “SMS” in the Middle East and Asia.
What is the difference between texting and twitter?
Twitter and texting may not have many similarities between them at first glance and yet, they do connect with one another on several aspects. Twitter and texting services both have character limits and because of this factor, the users are required to use acronyms and shortened forms of the words in order to get their messages across. But that of course, is where the similarities end.
Unarguably, it was texting that was introduced first to the world prior to the coming of twitter. However, the biggest difference would be the fact that twitter is a service that is obtained via the internet while texting is a service that is offered by the respective mobile networks of the individual. And twitter is also a service which was originally intended to be accessed via the computer whereas texting is done using a mobile phone. Although both services do have character limits, the character limit of twitter is 140 characters whereas the usual character limit of texting is 160 characters. However, twitter is a social networking facility whereas texting is more of a personalized way of sending messages. Once the user “tweets”, all his “followers” can see the message whereas a text message will be directed specifically at one or several people to whom the user wants to convey the message.
Twitter is a free service whereas texting is a service that is usually charged by the mobile companies that provide the services. A tweet and a text both contain various characters such as #, &, @ and etc which facilitate the massager to use lesser amounts of words. Using characters like # and @ has another function at twitter where the hash symbol is used to make the tweets more searchable whereas @ is used to link another user to the message. The use of such specific functions to specific characters cannot be seen in texting.
However, texting has also seized the internet in the present and certain service providers are offering lower charges for texting over the net. On the other hand, most people have begun using twitter via their mobile phones. Therefore, one can see these two services crossing paths more often than not in the modern world of communication today.
