Email and twitter are of course, two very different services both of which can be obtained via internet. Email and twitter and connected by their common purpose of communication and yet, the ways in which they go about accomplishing this task are very different. Twitter is a social network offered by one company which was invented as a result of the recent upsurge of social media and the users of twitter who belong to same groups can communicate with each other without any hindrance. Email on the other hand, is a digital message service that was invented as a cheaper and a faster alternative to the conventional mail service. Email is indeed the result of a group of technologies. There are many email service providers such as Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo and also, there can be other implementations of email that are localized to a certain company or group’s Intranet or local network as well.

The word limit pertaining to each of these services is also a very crucial factor. Twitter has a well known limit of 140 characters because of which the users are forced to come up with acronyms to convey their messages on twitter. Emails do not have such a character limit and one can type as much as he she likes and the users do not have to use acronyms in order for compose an email. However, there does exist a certain size of an email that the users are required to comply to. This limit pertains to any sort of files or attachments that the user seeks to send to the recipient along with the mail. Twitter, however does not have a facility to attach files along with the message when it gets sent.

The messages posted in twitter can be seen by all those who are subscribed or are “following” the author. An email, however, is a more personalized type of a service where the sender is required to specify the address of the recipient for whom the message is intended. Thus email functions as a sort of a letter type correspondence whereas twitter is more of a public short messaging service where there is a private messaging function but which is really the exception rather than the norm.
