It is not a secret that in the modern world, on whatever the device one is using, he would love to have display. These displays help them to monitor the device easily. The digital display concept is basically seen in televisions. Then computers have displays and they are called monitors. Even though we use TVs and computer monitors, we hardly know how they differ from each other. Therefore, this article aims at providing knowledge on the differences between TV and computer monitor.
What is a TV?
Television (often abbreviated to TV or idiot box in British English) is a widely used telecommunication system for broadcasting and receiving moving pictures and sound over a distance. The term may also be used to refer specifically to a television set, programming or television transmission. The etymology of the word has a mixed Latin and Greek origin, meaning “far sight”. A television system may be made up of multiple components, so a screen which lacks an internal tuner to receive the broadcast signals is called a monitor rather than a television. A television may be built to receive different broadcast or video formats, such as high-definition television (HDTV). Older televisions without modern LCD or plasma screens used bigger electronics components to operate and broadcast video to a television. One of the most important pieces was the D-Board or digital board. The D-Board is essentially the main hub of the television and if the television fails to work, it is likely an issue on the D-Board causing a problem. Commercially available since the late 1920s, the television set has become commonplace in homes, businesses and institutions, particularly as a vehicle for advertising, a source of entertainment, and news. Since the 1950s, television has been the main medium for moulding public opinion. Since the 1970s, video recordings on VCR tapes and later, digital playback systems such as DVDs have enabled the television to be used to view recorded movies and other programs. Television signals were originally transmitted exclusively via land-based transmitters. The quality of reception varied greatly, dependent in large part on the location and type of receiving antenna. Digital systems may be inserted anywhere in the chain to provide better image transmission quality, reduction in transmission bandwidth, special effects, or security of transmission from reception by non-subscribers. A home today might have the choice of receiving analogue or HDTV over the air, analogue or digital cable with HDTV from a cable television company over coaxial cable, or even from the phone company over fibre optic lines.
What is computer monitor?
The computer monitor is an output device that is part of your computer’s display system. A cable connects the monitor to a video adapter (video card) that is installed in an expansion slot on your computer’s motherboard. This system converts signals into text and pictures and displays them on a TV-like screen (the monitor). It is another term for display screen. The term monitor, however, usually refers to the entire box, whereas display screen can mean just the screen. In addition, the term monitor often implies graphics capabilities. Older computer monitors were built using cathode ray tubes (CRTs), which made them rather heavy and caused them to take up a lot of desk space. Most modern monitors are built using LCD technology and are commonly referred to as flat screen displays. These thin monitors take up much less space than the older CRT displays. This means people with LCD monitors have more desk space to clutter up with stacks of papers, pens, and other objects. Most monitors range in size from 15″ to 21″ or more. This size is a diagonal measurement from one corner of the screen to the other. Monitors that are 16 or more inches diagonally are often called full-page monitors. There are many ways to classify monitors. The most basic is in terms of colour capabilities, which separates monitors into three classes, which are called monochrome, grey-scale and colour monitors. The resolution of a monitor indicates how densely packed the pixels are. In general the more pixels the display has, (often expressed in dots per inch) the sharper the image. Most modern monitors can display 1024 by 768 pixels, the SVGA standard. Some high-end models can display 1280 by 1024, or even 1600 by 1200. A few monitors are fixed frequency, which means that they accept input at only one frequency. Most monitors, however, are multiscanning, which means that they automatically adjust themselves to the frequency of the signals being sent to it. This means that they can display images at different resolutions, depending on the data being sent to them by the video adapters. The range of signal frequencies the monitor can handle is called the bandwidth. This determines how much data it can process and therefore how fast it can refresh at higher resolutions.
What is the difference between computer monitor and a TV monitor?
The main difference (originally) between “television” and “monitor” is a television has a built-in tuner to select broadcast and/or cable channels from a coaxial cable, and a monitor does not. In order to watch TV you need a tuner. It doesn’t matter if the tuner is in your TV or provided by your TV service provider. The bottom line is having a tuner. Television screens are typically viewed from a distance, so they are built larger than the average computer screen. To accommodate the presentation of small, yet well-defined images, computer monitors utilise smaller dot (pixel) sizes and greater convergence standards than those applicable to television receivers. On a television screen, from a few meters away, the pixels that make up the image can be much larger than on a computer screen, and still provide a clear, sharp image with something like 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) pixels. Step closer to a large TV, however, and you’ll start to see the individual square picture elements. Monitors are used for viewing small detail, like text, from a close distance. To make things look sharp, the screen needs smaller pixels, packed together more densely. A contemporary 27″ iMac is considerably smaller than current +40″ TVs, but the pixel count goes well beyond Full HD at 2560 x 1440. Computer monitors have limited input options, while TV sets have a lot of input connectors. And again, unlike computer monitors, have built-in speakers.
In computer monitors, the video frequency (bandwidth), which is the measurement determining how many dots can be transmitted per second to form an image, is generally 15 MHz or greater. But in case of TV or video monitors, the bandwidth is generally not more than 6 MHz. Computer monitors are capable of accepting signals only from the central processing unit of a computer. Therefore they are unable to reproduce a colour image from a composite video signal whose waveform conforms to a broadcast standard (NTSC, PAL and D-MAC). The horizontal scanning frequency of these monitors varies according to the standards for various display modes, generally from 15 kHz to over 155 kHz. Some are capable of multiple horizontal scanning frequencies. Horizontal scanning frequency of video/TV monitors is fixed, usually 15.6 or 15.7 kHz depending on applicable television standard.
