Difference between tsunami and hurricane
Tsunami vs hurricane:
Tsunamis and hurricanes are catastrophic natural disasters that occur once in a while in the atmosphere which usually causes unimaginable destruction. While the terms tsunami and hurricanes can invoke fear in the most fearless of all men, the difference between these two words may be quite vague to someone who may not have experienced them first hand.
A tsunami as derived from the Japanese word that stands for “harbor wave”, is a series of large waves of water that occurs due to the displacement of a large volume of a body of water such as the ocean or a lake. Tsunamis usually occur after Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions, landslides, glacier carvings, meteorite impacts and other disturbances above or below water as such occurrences possess the ability to create disturbances within the water thereby causing a drastic rise in the waves. Tsunamis are also referred to as tidal waves as they normally resemble the raising of the tide instead of a normal wave, as tsunami waves can reach up to heights of tens of meters which is quite large. Although tsunamis affect coastal areas mostly, the destruction that they can cause is quite high. Among the most catastrophic of all natural disaster of the human history is the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which claimed more than 230,000 human lives in 14 countries in the Indian ocean.
A hurricane can be best defined as a tropical cyclone which is smaller in size and yet, which causes considerable damage. A hurricane consists of circular movements of winds which circulate at least at the speed of 74 mph and are especially found in the West Atlantic Ocean. Hurricanes are further classified according to their strength which is measured by the Saffir-Simpson Scale. They consist of five strengths with the maximum rating of sustained winds over 156 mph (136 knots; 251 kph). A tropical cyclone or a hurricane is generally followed by thunderstorms and they usually occur over the surface of the ocean waters. It has a warm core storm system where the center or the eye of the cyclone is warmer than the surrounding wind. These types of cyclones reach the land in the guise of hurricanes and cause significant harm to both man and property. A hurricane is characteristic of its a low-pressure center and a series of thunderstorms that produce strong winds and heavy rain.
What is the difference between a hurricane and tsunami?
Tsunamis and hurricanes are both natural disasters that can cause great damage to both human lives and properties. And yet, the natures of these two disastrous phenomena are very different. The name tsunami is of Japanese origin whereas an Australian Met man named Clement Wragge named the hurricane. However, a tsunami can be defined as a series of waves that are cause by the displacement of a large body of water where large waves amounting to tens and twenties of meters can surge inland, washing away any humans, buildings or property along with it. A hurricane on the other hand is best described as a powerful storm.
A hurricane is formed around atmospheric conditions around a weak disturbance in the atmosphere are favorable and usually over warm ocean waters during warm months. A tsunami, however, is easily triggered by volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, underwater explosions and such which eventually result in large disturbances in the sea or other large bodies of water. A hurricane is also formed on water and loses its force once it reaches inland and therefore, the amount of harm that can be caused by a hurricane inland is relatively low when compared to the amount of harm caused by a tsunami. A tsunami is most catastrophic to those who live inland along the coastal line whereas all those who sail at sea are considered safe from tsunami waves. The reason for this is that tsunami waves have low wave height and very long wavelength because of which they are hardly noticed at sea. However at reaching shallow waters, their height increases and grows tremendously, attacking the inlands with much violence and vigor. A hurricane on the other hand causes more harm to vessels, ships and other things at sea as it also has the potential to raise high tidal waves. Although significant flooding inland can occur due to a hurricane, this is not done with as much force and aggression as a tsunami most of the time.
