Difference between terrestrial and Jovian planets
Terrestrial planets vs Jovian planets:
The universe is a sprawling place which consists of hundreds and thousands of other solar systems which have not even been discovered yet by human beings. These solar systems consist of planets of different natures, each bearing characteristics which are unique to themselves. The planets which are found in our solar system are divided in to two categories such as terrestrial and Jovian planets according to the very nature of their being.
About terrestrial planets
A terrestrial planet is primarily made up of rock and it is generally equipped with an iron or a molten core which is surrounded by a layer which is composed of silicates. Terrestrial planets also tend to possess atmospheres which are made up of various gases. Depending upon the amount of heat that these planets receive from their star, certain terrestrial planets are capable of supporting various life forms as well. The four inner planets of our solar system, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars as well as certain dwarf planets such as Ceres are terrestrial planets.
About Jovian planets
Jovian planets are said to be made mostly of gases and they tend to be extremely large in comparison to other sorts of planets which exist in our solar system. Generally, these enormous multi layered atmospheres consist of hydrogen, helium, and sometimes, ammonia, methane, and water. Some Jovian planets are known to possess rocky cores which are surrounded by large amounts of gas which have been collected during planetary formation from the clouds of hydrogen and helium floating through the primordial solar nebula. However large they are, Jovian planets are not known as supporters of life due to their lack of well defined surfaces and the enormous gravity which exists in them because of their enormous size. The four outermost true planets of our solar system which are namely Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are known to be Jovian planets.
What is the difference between Jovian planets and terrestrial planets?
The main difference between Jovian and terrestrial planets is the fact that while terrestrial planets are made primarily of rock, Jovian planets are mostly made up of gases. However, Jovian planets do consist of a rocky core at times which is usually roughly the size of a terrestrial planet. Terrestrial planets on the other hand possess cores which are typically iron or molten.
Because of the fact that Jovian planets are made up of gases, they are considered to be less dense than terrestrial planets which are made up of rock. Also, the atmosphere of Jovian and terrestrial planets are rather different. While the atmosphere of terrestrial planets are made up mostly of carbon dioxide and nitrogen gases, the gases which can be found in the atmosphere of Jovian planets are mostly hydrogen and helium.
Jovian planets are usually very much larger in size than terrestrial planets which are of a smaller size because of the amount of mass they contain as well as problems encountered with gravity by much larger objects. Because of this reason, terrestrial planets tend to orbit closer to the sun whereas Jovian planets tend to orbit in somewhat of a distance to the sun. Coupled with the presence of even surfaces and the right amount of heat from the sun, terrestrial planets are said to be quite conducive to life. Jovian planets are not believed to be supporting any life forms mainly due to the lack of well defined surfaces. Also, because of their enormous size, the gravity of these giants may be too much for living forms to bear up whereas the gravity of terrestrial planets are much less owing to their smaller size.
Jovian planets tend to have more moons than terrestrial planets, owing to their enormous gravitational powers which attract other objects towards them. Also certain Jovian planets possess rings around them which are not seen around terrestrial planets. Another factor which separates the two is the fact that while terrestrial planets tend to spin much slower than Jovian planets, Jovian planets are seen to be spinning at a great speed. Because of this reason, these gas giants are seen to be flattened at the poles.
