Difference between table salt and sea salt
Table salt vs sea salt:
It is a little known fact that salt was once given as wage to Roman soldiers, from which factor the word “salary” has been forged today. This factor sums up the importance of salt in the days of long ago and the significant role that salt plays in our lives has still not ceased to be. Also known as NaCl, salt is obtained from sea water or by underground. Various salts exist such as table salt, sea salt, kosher salt, iodized salt and etc that are readily available in markets worldwide.
What is table salt?
Table salt is a highly refined salt that is obtained from land salt deposits. Table salt is 99.9% sodium chloride and is known as the ideal cooking salt. Table salt is mined, heat-blasted and chemically treated because of which it is deprived of all its minerals leaving only sodium and chloride behind. However, iodine is added to table salt today as a solution for iodine deficiency diseases that people suffer from in the current world and hence, most table salts contain a certain amount of iodine as well in addition to sodium chloride. The amount of iodine in table salt differs from one country to another whereas ‘doubly fortified salt’ contains both iodide and iron salts. In addition to iodine and other enrichments added to it, table salt also contains many chemicals such as anti-caking agents that have been added to make the salt free-flowing which in turn may affect the health of the consumer in an undesirable manner.
What is sea salt?
Sea salt is obtained from evaporating sea water thereby leaving behind residual salt. Sea water contains sodium chloride in excess and thus, sea water is accumulated in a certain area where it is evaporated using solar energy thereby leaving behind sodium chloride crystals. Sea salt is known to be 90-98% sodium chloride, while 2-10% is made of other important minerals like iron, sulfur, magnesium and the like which in turn contribute towards the color and the flavor of the sea salt. The process of producing sea salt is performed on several steps. First, the sand or clay that is contained in the sea water is removed whereas it is in the next tank that salt is deposited along with other impurities. Sea salt is known to be the least refined salt of all because of which many people consider it to be a healthy alternative to table salt.
What is the difference between sea salt and table salt?
While there is not much of a difference between the tastes of these two salts, they differ greatly according to the places from where they are obtained. Table salt is the most commonly used salt that is used for cooking purposes which is obtained from underground salt deposits whereas sea salt is obtained from evaporation of sea water. However, table salt is highly processed and chemically treated that it may contain harmful additives whereas sea salt is known as the least processed of both which is thus considered as the healthier of the two owing to the absence of harmful additives in the salt.
During the processing of table salt, all other nutrients such as iron, sulfur and the like are removed thus leaving table salt 99.9% sodium chloride only. Because of this reason, table salt is now enriched with iodine and other nutrients in order to make it nutritious. Sea salt on the other hand contains a large amount of other minerals in it as well where only 90-98% is sodium chloride and the other 2-10% comprises of other important minerals. Sea salt does not even contain harmful additives as it is the least processed of all salts.
At the very outset, one can see that table salt is pure white in color as it has been bleached in the production process. Sea salt however, does not have the pure white color that table salt has. Sea salt will have little specks of pink in it, which serve as proof for the presence of many minerals contained in it. Sea salt is thus considered as beneficial for many conditions such as blood pressure. It is also said that sea salt has the power to stabilize the heart beat, balance blood sugar, better absorb food particles which in turn enhances digestion, also clearing mucus from the lungs. Table salt on the other hand is said to be harmful to the human body as it causes water retention due to the absence of minerals in the salt.
