Difference between shrimp and lobster
Shrimp vs lobster:
Shrimps and lobsters are both eagerly devoured as scrumptious dishes of delectable seafood and yet, one may not be so much aware of the many differences between these two species due to their many similarities. Shrimp and lobster are closely related crustaceans because of which they share many similar features which tend to confuse many. And yet, in terms of appearance, food habits, etc, lobsters and shrimp are quite different which makes it easy to set them apart.
What is shrimp?
Shrimp can be categorized as decapods crustaceans of which more than 125 species exist in brackish water, freshwater, and saltwater except for in polar waters. Equipped with a head and thorax which are fused to form the cephalothorax, which is then covered with the carapace, they are able to tolerate high levels of toxicity which definitely serves as an advantage to these rather fascinating creatures. A shrimp is quite capable of growing up to 15 centimetres although the average length of a shrimp may be around 10 centimeters in length. Shrimp is known for their high nutrient values of calcium, iodine, and protein and are consumed widely by human beings as well as being major sources of food for many a zooplankton, ranging from fish to whales.
What is lobster?
A lobster is a member of the crustacean family which is found in the marines. They belong to the Nephropidae or Homaridae superfamilies and are known to grow up to fifty centimeters long at most. Lobsters are of many types, the clawed lobster, spiny lobster and the claw less lobster to name a few. Lobsters are known to possess a hard shielding exoskeleton and are therefore known as essential invertebrates. Lobsters feed on live food which may include mollusks, other crustaceans, fish, worms and some plant life and they need to molt in order to grow. Sometimes lobsters even eat their own flesh after molting under extreme conditions. They are generally blue or copper in color because of their blue blood which contains copper and haemocyanin.
What is the difference between lobster and shrimp?
Unarguably, shrimp and lobster and definitely related, what with their similar crustacean backgrounds with similar bodies with compound eyes, head fused with the body and etc. They can both be found in brackish waters, salt water or fresh water and yet, they are very different in size which is the most distinguishable feature between the two. While a lobster tends to be rather big in size, growing up to fifty centimeters long whereas the maximum length of a shrimp would be around twenty centimeters long. Thereby, it is known that even most jumbo shrimp that are discovered in the world today are smaller than lobsters who tend to be quite big in size.
Shrimp are quite diversified than lobsters and there are around 125 varieties of shrimp available worldwide. And yet, there are only about 48 species of lobster available in the seas which places them below the astounding diversity of the shrimps. However, a shrimp tends to have a much narrower body than a lobster and they are usually gray, white and green in color while shrimp are known to change color according to their surroundings. Lobsters, however are blue or copper in color because of their blue blood which contains copper and haemocyanin.
The procreation routine of the lobster and the shrimp are different as well. While the lobster is known to carry their eggs along with them, shrimp release their eggs out in to the open sea. Also, while shrimp are not known to use their appendages which stand in the form of minute legs to crawl and instead use them for swimming, lobsters on the contrary, are known to use these appendages for crawling along.
