Plant proteins vs animal proteins:
Food is essential for the human body as they contain essential nutrients that are indispensable for the functioning of the human system. These nutrients are obtained by different sorts of food. While some nutrients are offered by plants others are offered by animals. And yet, in some instances, the same type of nutrient is offered by both plants and animals and one such nutrient thus offered is plant proteins and animal proteins. It is a major concern of vegans whether or not they can obtain the same amount of protein that one obtains from meat by consuming vegetables alone. While it is a possibility, there do exist certain minor differences between the proteins that are offered by plants and the type of proteins that is offered by animal food products.
What are plant proteins?
Plant proteins, just as the name indicates, it the type of protein that one obtains from plants. This type of protein can be obtained from consuming food such as Black beans, soy beans, sunflower seeds, lentils, tofu, etc and are said to contain almost the same amount of protein that animal food sources offer. Plant proteins also offer rather large doses of vitamins, minerals, fibers and antioxidants to the diet as well as sufficient amounts of Beta-carotene, dietary fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, folate, Iron, Magnesium and Calcium.
What are animal proteins?
Animal proteins is the type of protein that is obtained from animal food products. This type of protein can be obtained from various meats, fish, eggs, etc. Animal proteins possess sufficient amounts of amino acids which are essential nutrients for the human body. However, animal proteins are known to contain high amounts of cholesterol and fat, thereby increasing the chance of blood pressure and heart related diseases in individuals.
What is the difference between animal protein and plant protein?
The main difference between animal protein and plant protein would be the sources that they are obtained from. Plant protein is obtained from plant products such as soy bean, lentils, nuts, etc whereas animal proteins are obtained from animal products such as meats, fish, eggs, etc.
Plant proteins contain almost the same protein value that animal proteins possess. In addition to this, plant proteins do not contain any cholesterol or saturated fat as opposed to animal proteins which in turn reduce the risk of high blood pressure and heart related diseases. Plant proteins are also packed full of a wide variety of vitamins and other nutrients such as Beta-carotene, dietary fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, magnesium, Iron, Folate and Calcium than animal proteins. Thereby, consuming plant proteins proves to be a much healthier option than animal proteins.
Although plant proteins contain almost the same amount of protein value as what is obtained from animals, they lack amino acids which are considered as quite essential to the human body. Even soy beans which are considered as the plant product which provides an almost complete set of of plant protein lacks methionine which is an essential amino acid that is contained in animal protein. Because of this reason, vegetarians are encouraged to consume a healthy diet of mixed vegetable sources which will eventually make up for the deficiency on amino acids that plant proteins have.
