The family of citruses is quite large that even the most ardent of all fruit lovers may not be familiar with all the varieties of citrus fruits which share the same genes. Orange is the generic name that is used for almost all the varieties of the citrus family, although each of these species carries their own unique name. Tangerine and orange are two such citrus fruits which are closely related to each other. Because of this factor, the many differences shared between them may be drowned out by the overpowering amount of similarities which exist, thus beguiling many citrus lovers worldwide.
The orange, also known as Citrus sinensis the most grown tree fruit in the world. It is an evergreen flowering tree which known as a hybrid version of pomelo and mandarin and is widely cultivated under tropical and subtropical climates. The history of oranges however, dates back to 2500 BC to China. The name ‘orange’ applies to the sweet orange thereby making a distinction from the bitter orange which is also known as the Seville orange. Oranges can be eaten as whole after the bitter rind had been cut off and juice can be drunk once extracted from the fruit. The orange peel which is known to carry medicinal properties can also be used for many culinary and cosmetic purposes. There exists various types of citrus fruits in the world which go by the generic name of orange due to the common characteristics and the similar appearance.
The tangerine, also referred to as Citrus tangerine is a citrus fruit which belongs to the mandarin family. The tangerine resembles an orange and yet is much smaller than an orange. Just like an orange, it is orange in color, divides itself into segments and yet, it is often less sour or tart than an orange. Tangerines have a long history of about 8000 years, having been initially cultivated in china and in Japan, while it is being widely cultivated in Burma today. However, they were not known in the Western world until the 19th century. There exist many types of tangerines in the market such as Honey tangerines, sunburst tangerines, Dancy tangerine, the ponkan or the Chinese honey tangerine, Satsuma mandarin and etc. Tangerines are usually eaten peeled and out of hand. They are also used in salads, desserts and main dishes alike. While the peel is dried and used in Sichuan cuisine, the juice of the tangerine is available in supermarkets in the US.
What is the difference between tangerine and orange?
Tangerines and oranges both belong to the citrus family and yet, they have very different characteristics if one bothers to look close enough. At a first glance, one can definitely note a difference in the color of these two fruits. A tangerine has a rather deep orange color which cannot be observed in an orange. The color of an orange is usually a light orange color, much lighter than the color of the tangerine. With regards to the size of the fruits as well, the differences ensue. The tangerine is much smaller than an orange whereas the orange is a large, juicy fruit. Owing to its size, the tangerine is believed to be an excellent pocket food as it also has a thin skin that can easily be removed. On the contrary, the orange has a much thicker skin that cannot be as easily removed as that of a tangerine.
Tangerine trees are usually much smaller than orange trees and another difference between the two species comes to mind when it comes to the nature of tangerine and orange flowers. The orange flower is said to harbor great fragrance that can be felt for a long distance whereas tangerine flowers do not carry such a powerful fragrance. These orange flowers, commonly known as orange blossom, are traditionally worn by the bride of a wedding.
Oranges are more acidic than tangerines, owing to their bigger size. Also, the nutritional values of the two fruits are also very different. An average sized tangerine measures at 13.34 g Carbohydrates, 10.58 g sugar, 0.31 g fat, 0.81 g Protein whereas an average orange measures at 11.54 g Carbohydrates, 9.14 g Sugars, 0.21 g Fat and 0.70 Protein.
