Difference between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama
Mitt Romney vs Barack Obama:
With the heat of the presidential elections in full swing, the names Mitt Romney and Barack Obama have become common household names which spring up even during conversations of most banal kind. The times of a presidential elections can be a time of doubt, turmoil and great inspiration to any country loving citizen as they strive desperately to make up their mind between the many choices that have been presented to them and engage in an internal battle as to how and why they should make this all important choice which determines the fate of the country for many years to come.
Barack Obama
Born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii, Barack Hussein Obama II holds a prestigious position as the very first African American to hold office as well as the current and the 44th president of the United States of America. Prior to assuming office, he served as a United States Senator of Illinois from the year 2005 until the presidential elections held in 2008 where he was elected as president.
Born to an English mother and a Kenyan father, Obama had a rather diversified childhood which was spent in Hawaii and Indonesia both, reveling in this wondrous multicultural heritage. Although he was raised by a single mother when his father left them to attend Harvard, he cherished this wonderful mix of cultures in his heart which in turn, made him in to the person that he is today.
Barack Obama was an active student and an active citizen even well before he came in to politics. Obama served as a community organizer in Chicago even before earning his law degree and later on he went on to become the president of the Harvard Law Review. After successfully completing his education at Harvard, Obama entered the justice system as a civil rights attorney in Chicago as well as serving as a lecturer of constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from the year 1992 to 2004.
After having represented the 13th District in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004 for three terms, Obama fails in his attempt to gain a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 2000. And yet, his victory in the March 2004 Illinois Democratic primary for the Senate election and his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004, gains him much attention and recognition nationwide. And yet, winning the Democratic Party’s nomination for presidential elections against Hillary Rodham Clinton was a close one after the victory of which he defeated the Republican nominee John McCain in the presidential elections of 2008 and assumed office on January 20, 2009.
Since then, Barack Obama has been part of many a significant turning points in the history of the United States of America. He is responsible for initiating many policies such as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act which expands access to insurance to over 30 million Americans in addition to other privileges , the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act which brought the most significant changes to financial regulation in the United States which by creating a significant change in the American financial regulatory environment, affected all Federal financial regulatory agencies and almost every aspect of the nation’s financial services industry. He also initiated the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act of 2010 which repealed the Don’t ask, don’t tell (DADT) policy, which originally prevented openly gay and lesbian people from serving in the United States Armed Forces since 1993. Barack Obama was named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate for implementing international policy acts such as ending the war in Iraq, involving the US in the Libya military invention in the year 20111, signing the New START arms control treaty with Russia and also in eradicating the fear of terrorist attacks in the American citizen by conducting operations against Osama Bin Laden which ultimately resulted in his death. Obama has expressed his interest in seeking re-election in the 2012 presidential election as well.
Mitt Romney
Born in March 12, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan, to the former Governor of Michigan, George W. Romney and Lenore Romney, Willard Mitt Romney is better known today as the 70th Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007 who is also an American businessman and a politician. Named after hotel magnate J. Willard Marriott, his father’s best friend, , Milton Romney is the youngest of the three Romney children Margo Lynn and Jane LaFount who were born and raised in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
Essentially a highly educated individual, Mitt Romney attained his bachelor’s degree from the Brigham Young University and went in to Juris Doctor/Master of Business Administration joint degrees from Harvard’s law and business schools. From there onwards, he enters the management consulting business, thus securing a place for himself at Bain & Company which he serves as CEO in his later years. He is also the co-founder of Bain Capital which later on goes on to become one of the largest firms of its kind in the nation. Romney is also an active member of the church who first served as ward bishop and later on as the stake president in his area as well. With respect to other projects that he took the initiative, Romney is responsible for generating a significant amount of profit by organizing and orchestrating the 2002 Winter Olympics as the Salt Lake Organizing Committee and thereby turning around the not so favorable reputation of the games.
The political life of Mitt Romney commenced as he was elected as the Governor of Massachusetts in 2002 during which time he leaned towards American conservatism and yet, he did not go on to seek reelection at the end of his term. During this period, he was responsible for eliminating a $3 billion deficit by orchestrating a series of spending cuts and increases in fees. During his time, he also introduced a near-universal health insurance by signing the Massachusetts health care reform legislation which was considered as the first of its kind in the history of America.
Mitt Romney expressed his interest in participating in the 2008 presidential elections and ran for the Republican nomination as well. Even though he received a favorable feedback during his campaign, he eventually lost his nomination to John McCain who ran against Barack Obama for presidency in 2008. However, he did not remain passive afterwards as he was seen raising funds and delivering speeches on the behalf of his fellow republicans. However, he has once again expressed his interest in running for presidency in the 2012 presidential awards and is showing much promise in his series of campaigns with a dignified air of calm presidential authority.
What is the difference between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama?
The common factor between both of these prominent figures is the fact that both have expressed their interest in competing in the 2012 presidential elections. And yet, while Barack Obama has already held office as president during 2008, for Romney this is the first time that he is participating in the presidential elections.
Although Mitt Romney has expressed his interest in participating in the presidential elections of 2008, he lost the republican nomination for John McCain who ran against Obama in 2008 and lost. Another difference between both would be while Obama would be competing as a democratic competitor whereas Romney would be competing as the republican nominee in the 2012 election.
Let us look at the most obvious differences between the two. While Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and raised and schooled in Indonesia, Mitt Romney was born in Detroit, Michigan and was raised and schooled in Michigan itself. Furthermore, while Barack Obama came from a multicultural background, being born to a Kenyan father and an English mother, Mitt Romney was born to English parents of Scottish and German descent.
Both the individuals are well educated people who are pioneers in their own respective fields. Before being elected as president, Obama was a civil rights attorney in Chicago by profession. He attained his degree at Harvard law degree and lectured constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School as well. And yet, Mitt Romney was a thriving businessman who obtained his education from the Brigham Young University and a Juris Doctor/Master of Business Administration joint degrees from Harvard’s law and business schools consecutively. After completing his education, Mitt Romney was employed at Bain & Company of which he went on to become CEO later on.
While Mitt Romney came from a political background, Barack Obama had no such advantage. Mitt Romney was the youngest child of George W. Romney, who served as a Governor of Michigan and a prominent member of the society in his time. He is also a descendant of a genealogically interconnected political family sometimes known as the Pratt–Romneys. And yet, Barack Obama had no such political background. Also, while Mitt Romney possesses a notable business background whereas Barack Obama has a legal background. Mitt Romney co-founded Bain Capital which went on to become one of the most successive and the largest of its kind in the country. He also turned around the fate of the extremely unsuccessful Winter Olympics in 2002 as the head of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee and made it to be one of the most successful and the most profitable events of all time. Perhaps, it is because of this reason that Mitt Romney has an effective recovery plan for America which covers 59 very relevant points and a large area of the subject matter whereas Barack Obama seems to possess no such plan. Yet, Barack Obama possesses an extensive knowledge regarding law as he not only practiced as a civil rights attorney, he also taught law at the University of Chicago Law School as a lecturer whereas Mitt Romney does not display such expertise on the field of law.
Another difference pertains regarding the two when it comes to women’s rights. Mitt Romney had always been an ardent defender of a woman’s right to choose and yet, he claims himself to be pro-life when it comes to abortions. And yet, being the only individual in Illinois who voted against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, Obama is a pro-choice individual who believes that a woman has every right to do whatever she likes with her body and this includes the right to decide whether or not a woman would prefer to keep a womb that is growing inside her own body. Thereby, one can say that while Mitt Romney is pro-life, Barack Obama remains to be pro-choice.
It is also a well-known fact that president Obama was named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate for implementing numerous international peace policy acts whereas Mitt Romney has not attained any such laureates. Thereby, one can see that while these two individuals both intend on running for presidency in the year 2012, they are catalysts in their own respective fields who have created significant change in the society to the best of their capacities.
