Heat and temperature are both terms that are often heard of when speaking about the weather and the climate. However, these two words do not limit themselves to the climate as they are two words that are often discussed with regards to various disciplines of science such as physics and chemistry as well. It must also be said that both heat and temperature are governed by the laws of thermodynamics that believe that nature is constantly trying to evenly distribute all the energy in a closed system such as the environment. Although heat and temperature seem like similar words, they hold different connotations within them and in order to properly comprehend what these words imply with regards to different contexts in which they are used, one must be familiar with regards to the true and proper meaning of these words individually.
What is heat?
Heat is an energy that is measured by joules and can be defined as a sort of energy that is transferred, usually from a low temperature to a high temperature from one system to another by way of thermal interaction. Heat can be introduced as both a potential energy that can be stored and as a kinetic energy which moves as well. Heat is usually measured by the use of a calorimeter or by various calculations based upon other quantities. Latent heat and sensible heat are two terms that are often used in study fields such as physics, especially in calorimetry.
What is temperature?
Temperature measures the kinetic energy contained in the molecules of an object. It defines a physical property that quantitatively measures the notions of hot and cold. Natural sciences, specially physics, geology, chemistry, atmospheric sciences and biology have a special regard for temperature as it is a term that is often utilized within these contexts. The temperature of an object depends upon the speed of the particles that is contained within it, raised to the second power. With regards to entrophy, temperature is often regarded as a derivative of the internal energy. Temperature is measured by the scales Kelvin, Celsius, and Fahrenheit.
What is the difference between temperature and heat?
Heat and temperature are most definitely linked with one another, especially when it comes to certain fields of the natural sciences such as physics, geology, chemistry, atmospheric sciences and biology. However, heat and temperature are two different notions that must be investigated independently, although it is more important to seek out the relationship that exists between these two aspects.
With regards to a physical body, when heat is introduced to a particular object, the molecules that are contained within it start moving faster, colliding with one another and in the process, producing more heat. Thus, the temperature of the body increases as a result of the heat that is produced within the body. Temperature is measured by measuring these collisions that take place within. Changes occur when heat is applied whereas temperature cannot be applied thus. For example, ice is melted once heat has been applied to it and yet, this has nothing to do with the change of temperature.
Temperature can be introduced as an intensive property, while heat is an extensive property. For example, the boiling temperature of water is 100 degrees Centigrade and this will remain so regardless the fact that one boils 100 liters of water of 1 liter. However, heat must be applied in order to boil this water and the amount of heat that must be applied to boiling one liter of water is very much different to the amount of heat that must be applied to boil 1000 liters of water. However, heat and temperature can both be measured by the following formula.
