Difference between gust and wind
Gust vs wind:
It is no secret that weather indeed plays a major role in the day to day affairs of human beings. Natural phenomena such as rain, wind and other such condition can affect the usual flow of work that we as individuals are entrusted with and therefore, it is important that one constantly keeps an eye out for the varying climatic changes that occur from time to time. It is not enough that one constantly watches weather forecasts, but one should also possess a fair knowledge of what each different term mentioned in a weather forecast stands for. Different words crop up in different types of forecasts and sometimes, figuring out the meaning of those words is not so easy. Gust and wind are two such words that continue to confuse and baffle individuals across the globe, often misleading them in to thinking that these two words indeed stand for one and the same phenomena.
What is gust?
A gust can be defined as a short blast of wind that occurs very suddenly as a result of the increase of the speed of the wind. In order for a gust to occur, the speed of the wind has to reach a peak of at least 16 knots. A gust occurs usually at 2 minute intervals and ends as abruptly as it had begun. A gust can occur due to many reasons, one of them being the sudden shift of environmental pressure from high to low while the nature of the terrain too contributes greatly to this condition. When the wind passes through tall trees, tall man made infrastructures or mountains, the speed of the wind tends to increase for a short time and a gust occurs.
What is wind?
What we refer to as the wind is actually the rapid flow of gasses that occur within the environment that can also be defined as the bulk movement of air. While wind can occur in outer space as well in the form of solar wind, the wind that we experience on earth occurs as a result of hot air merging with cold air which causes differences in atmospheric pressures as hot air is a lot less dense than cold air. Rotation of the earth while it orbits around the sun is another reason for wind. Wind thus acts as a formidable agent of the earth, silently contributing towards many aspects of life on earth such as the formation of fertile soils, such as loess, erosion, moving of whole desserts, spreading of wildfires, dispersing of seeds, thus spreading life and the like.
What is the difference between wind and gust?
It might be rather complex to describe the difference between wind and gust as these two words are often associated with each other and are often used together as well. However, wind is what can be defined as the bulk movement of air or the rapid movement of gasses in the atmosphere whereas a gust can be defined as a short blast of wind that occurs due to a change of the wind. However, a gust can only occur at the presence of the wind whereas wind can very well occur at the absence of a gust.
The reasons for gusts and winds are different as well. A gust occurs due to the sudden shift of environmental pressure from high to low and also while wind blows through tall trees and buildings. Wind on the other hand occurs due to hot air merging with cold air thus creating changes in the atmospheric pressure. Earth’s rotation while it orbits around the sun is also cause for the wind to occur. However, it must be said that both gust and wind occur due to the flowing of gasses in the environment.
Wind when compared to a gust, lasts much longer and blows at varying speeds whereas a gust does not last for more than 20 seconds. Perhaps because of this exact same reason, winds have a more powerful impact upon the environment such as the shaping of lands by erosion and other means, spreading of seeds and thus contributing towards the continuation of life and etc. Gusts are not known to contribute towards such things.
