Certificate vs diploma:
There is no knowing to what heights education can take you in life. Nowadays, educational qualifications are regarded as the ultimate career boosters which can aid in a significant manner when it comes to raising one up their respective career paths as well as increasing one’s income and the life style. This is something which prompts many an individual to gain that extra educational qualification which in turn will help them along. Certificate and diploma are two such educational qualifications which are designed for such purposes. While they may sound alike, the benefits and the ways in which they can be attained are very different from one another.
What is a certificate?
A certificate is a document that is offered in proof that one has duly completed a sort of training or acquired the expected amount of knowledge which was offered during the course of a certificate program. It is a certification that one offers as proof that an individual has the skills and the knowledge that is needed to complete that specific stage of the course. A certificate course deals with specialized subject matter and is usually offered to people who have prior knowledge regarding the subject matter at hand. Also, a certificate program usually takes a very short time to complete and is looked upon as a quick method in obtaining the skills that are needed in specific occupations or fields. Some institutes which offer certificates can be listed as vocational schools, trade schools and junior colleges.
What is a diploma?
A diploma is an educational program that is typically offered for vocational and professional courses such as pharmacy, designing, journalism and the like and is usually offered by institutions such as professional and vocational schools, high schools, trade schools and community colleges. A diploma course takes up a relatively shorter time when compared to most educational certificates and are designed to address specific talents and the skills of a student during its short course. While a diploma is a basic level educational qualification, it could serve as a stepping stone which could lead up to more higher level educational qualifications as well.
What is the difference between diploma and certificate?
A diploma is normally defined as a document issued at the completion of a course by an educational institution, indicative of the individual successfully completing the course of study. A certificate on the other hand, has a broader definition as it can refer to any document which certifies certain things such as a birth certificate, a death certificate, a certificate of appreciation and etc. However, speaking in a study related context, a certificate does not necessarily indicate academic credentials as there exists no course or grade requirements required to earn one. A diploma on the other hand is different as it necessarily symbolizes the completion of academic credits and course requirements.
A certificate course has a much shorter duration when compared to a diploma course. While a diploma course can go one for about a year and more, a certificate course can generally be completed within a few months of time. This may be due to the fact that while a certificate course merely touches on one area of a subject, a diploma course is more detailed and profound in nature. And while diploma courses are often based on school graduation requirements, a certificate course is not generally related to school or graduation requirements.
A certificate can be awarded for even the most trivial things such as certificate of 100% attendance, secondary school completion certificate, graduating certificate and etc. However, diplomas cannot be awarded for such cases as diplomas are only awarded for higher degree qualifications. A certificate can be offered for diploma qualifications and yet, a diploma cannot be given for certificate qualifications in any case.
