Difference between cellular respiration and photosynthesis
Cellular respiration Vs photosynthesis:
Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are both cellular processes organisms which are utilized in obtaining energy that is needed for survival of certain things. These two terms are often confused to to the similarity of the two processes and yet, they are very different terms which deserve individual recognition.
What is cellular respiration?
Cellular respiration can be explained as the process in which certain organisms derive energy from food sources and then break them down in order to attain the right amount of energy necessary for that organism to function. The energy that is released during this process is then stored in the form of ATP (Adenosine Tri-Phosphate) and is then used when needed. It is a certain procession of metabolic reactions which occurs within the mitochondria of the cells of organisms which converts the biochemical energy obtained from food sources in to a more usable source of energy that will serve as useful to that particular organism. This happens in two steps. This can occur in either an aerobic or an anaerobic manner. While the Aerobic process utilizes oxygen to convect organic compounds in to energy, the anaerobic process does not involve energy during this process.
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis can be defined as the process in which the light energy obtained from the sun is converted into chemical energy with the help of chlorophyll pigments found on the plant’s leaves. It produces carbohydrates (sugars) from carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) with the aid of sunlight and this process can be defined as followsCarbon Dioxide + Water + Sunlight = Glucose + Oxygen
6CO2 + 6H2O + Sunlight –> C6H12O6 + 6O2The energy obtained from photosynthesis is used for the growth, reproduction, absorption of nutrients of the plant. The energy obtained thus is then stored in the form of starch which will ensure the survival of the plant in harsh conditions where energy sources will not be available to the plant anymore. This process can be influenced by many factors such as the temperature of the environment, carbon dioxide, water availability and sunlight. All these factors need to exist in moderate amounts in order for the photosynthesis process to occur effectively.
What is the difference between photosynthesis and cellular respiration?
While both the processes provide the energy that is needed for a plant to survive, these processes are very different from each other. The main difference between the two is that while photosynthesis is defined as the process during which plants utilize sunlight to generate energy, cellular respiration is the process in which this food is converted into energy which is used by plants and other living organisms.Also the places in which these processes take place are different from each other. While photosynthesis takes place inside the chloroplasts, organelles inside the plant cells that contain chlorophyll, cellular respiration occurs inside the mitochondria, organelles which are capable of breaking down glucose.While photosynthesis requires energy to produce glucose, cellular respiration utilizes this glucose to create energy which is otherwise known as ATP. Also while photosynthesis obtains carbon dioxide, water and sunlight from the atmosphere in order to create sugar and in turn, releases oxygen back into the air, cellular respiration combines sugars with oxygen and releases the energy as ATP, carbon dioxide and water as by products.Photosynthesis occurs exclusively in plants and some bacteria. Cellular respiration on the other hand, occurs in all living organisms.
