Beer and cider are not strange words to many an ear and yet, choosing between beer and cider may be a hard choice for many most of the time. Both beverages are available in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions and both beverages are popular drinks all over the world. However, many differences exist between beer and cider which even the most ardent of beer and cider lover may not be aware of.
What is beer?
Considered as the third most popular beverage in the world next to water and tea, beer is not only a widely consumed drink, it is also one of the oldest beverages in the world. Beer is made using a process of brewing and fermentation of sugars mostly gained through cereal grains, particularly malted barley and malted wheat.
The juice obtained from the wheat are placed in fermenting vessels and to this, yeast is added in order to enhance the fermentation process. This brewing is done in the least amount of time as possible as the beverage is known to get spoilt very quickly.
Beer usually has a 4%-6% of alcohol although this could range from 1%-20% at times. Beer dates back as far as the Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations and forms an important part of the culture of beer consuming countries worldwide by way of beer drinking festivals, etc.
What is cider?
In United States, the beverage that one calls apple cider is the liquid that one gets when apples are cut, mashed in to a liquid and pressed for juice. This juice which is obtained usually contains apple pulp and as a result, it is usually brown and quite cloudy. And also, this is easily spoilt and therefore, it must be kept refrigerated at all times. It is this unprocessed liquid that one refers to as cider in United States.
Yet in England, cider is best defined as an alcoholic drink. The apple is mashed and pressed to extract the juice and then this juice is allowed to ferment which in turn gives the juice its alcoholic property. The commercial cider producers add yeast to this juice to enhance and quicken the fermentation process whereas the natural cider, allowed ferment in its own sugars under natural conditions are referred to as soft cider. The cider is also constantly checked for its balance of nutrients, sugars and other aspects.
What is the difference between cider and beer?
The first and foremost difference between cider and beer commences from the ingredients that they use. Beer is made from fermenting malted barley whereas cider is made from fermenting apple juice. Beer also uses an amount of hops for flavoring the beverage whereas yeast is added to the mixture to aid along the fermentation process. Cider, on the other hand, is mostly left to ferment on its own as its high content of sugar often completes the fermentation process on its own. Sometimes a little amount of yeast is added but not so much as one would utilize for beer.
The two beverages differ when it comes to their color and taste as well. While cider comes in dry and sweet varieties, it is often more sweeter than beer. Beer on the other hand, comes in many forms such as ale and larger and due to its addition of hops, beer tends to taste much bitter than cider. Cider comes in light yellow, orange or brown colors in completely clear to cloudy with sediment ranges. The color of beer on the other hand, depends upon the color of the malt. While the most common color of them all is the pale amber color which the beers made with pale malts carry with them, they also come in darker colors which contain a lager malt base or pale malt with a mix of dark malt. The darkest of beers are made with patent malts while caramel is also used for darkening beers.
