Difference between bacteria and virus
Bacteria vs virus:
Of all the disease causing microorganism, bacteria and virus hold the center stage. They enter the human system and attach themselves to various organs of the human body thereby creating various malfunctions in the human system. However, while both these culprits may be as equally troublesome to the human beings, knowing the difference between a bacteria and a virus may be very helpful in reaching a diagnosis and thereby getting the correct treatments to cure the system of the many inconveniences that these pollutants bring along with them.
What are bacteria?
Bacteria belongs to a large domain of prokaryotic microorganisms and the come in a large range of shapes and sizes which grow in almost any surface such as soil, acidic hot springs, radioactive waste, water, the Earth’s crust, organic matter, live bodies of plants and animals which display performances of mutualism, in the digestive tracts of various species and even in human beings. Bacteria are living organisms that are essential in the natural recycling cycle with many components such as the fixation of nitrogen from the atmosphere and putrefaction depending upon it. However, bacteria are also responsible for causing many harmful diseases that the human beings suffer from including infectious diseases such as cholera, syphilis, anthrax, leprosy, and bubonic plague and even respiratory infections such as tuberculosis which has proved to be fatal to many.
What is virus?
Viruses are known to be the smallest and simplest life form known and they are known as submicroscopic particles which are capable of replicating itself in the living cells of organisms including animals, plants, bacteria and archaea. Virus particles are comprised of three parts which are the genetic material made from either DNA or RNA, long molecules that carry genetic information and a protein coat that protects these genes. Sometimes, a virus particle also consists of an envelope of lipids that surrounds the protein coat when they are outside a cell. Viruses are responsible for causing much disease such as influenza, HIV and other countless illnesses and antibiotics seem to have no effect on these pathogens whatsoever. However, immune responses to specific viruses can be attained by conferring an artificially acquired immunity specified to each specific virus.
What is the difference between a virus and bacteria?
While the difference between bacteria and virus may not bother many, the differences between them do however mater quite a lot to physicians and other individuals who constantly deal with these microorganisms. Bacteria and viruses both cause harm to the human system and have in time become rather cumbersome to the health of the entire human race. However, bacteria and viruses are different in many ways. For instance, a virus is considered as the smallest and simplest life form known and it also said to be 10 to 100 times smaller than bacteria. Also, a bacterium contains ribsomes while viruses do not contain any ribsomes. The structures of the two are also very different. A bacterium has DNA and RNA floating freely in cytoplasm while it also has a cell wall and a cell membrane. A virus on the other hand, has DNA or RNA enclosed inside a coat of protein. However, the biggest difference between the two would be the fact that viruses require a living host such as a plant or animal to multiply, whereas most bacteria can grow on non-living surfaces.
Certain bacteria are beneficial such as the kinds of bacteria that are needed for the recycling circle of the environment and yet, viruses are not known to be beneficial. Another difference between the two would be the fact that while bacteria are intercellular organisms which live in between cells, viruses are intracellular organisms that infiltrate the host cell and live inside the cell. The manners in which the two organisms reproduce are also very different. Bacteria reproduce by way of “fission” which is a form of asexual reproduction whereas viruses are known to invade a host cell and taking over the cell causing it to make copies of the viral DNA/RNA. The virus then destroys the host cell releasing new viruses. Bacteria are treated with antibiotics while viruses are treated with vaccines and antiviral treatment which prevent the spread of the virus or slow down the reproduction rate of the microorganism.
