Difference between astronomy and astrology
Astronomy vs astrology:
Astronomy and astrology would be deemed as synonyms at a first glance because of the apparent similarity of their terms. There do exist certain similarities between the two studies which make it difficult for the astronomy and astrology to be told apart. And yet, many differences exist between them as well which is why they cannot be named as one and the same. Astronomy and astrology both deal with planets and stars and yet, the basis on which they are observed and analyzed is very much different in the two fields.
Astronomy is a natural science which studies celestial objects such as stars, planets, comets, nebulae, star clusters and galaxies that exist outside the atmosphere of the earth. It also inspects in to the many phenomena which occurs outside the earth’s atmosphere that may or may not have an effect on planet earth. Astronomy is considered as one of the oldest sciences in the world thus being involved with the evolution, physics, chemistry, meteorology and motion of celestial objects, as well as the formation and development of the universe. There is plenty of proof that some of the world’s oldest civilizations such as the Babylonians, Greeks, Chinese, Indians, Iranians and Maya have observed the night sky and have reached many conclusions regarding many aspects of life on earth. Today, astronomy is divided in to two branches such as observational astronomy and theoretical astronomy, both of which aid each other in confirming the observations and theories of each field.
Derived from the Greek word ‘astrologia’ which means ‘account of the stars’, astrology is a collection of belief systems which are based on the theory that the behavior of planets affect certain aspects of the human world. A document referred to as a horoscope is made according to the planetary locations observed at the time of one’s birth and based on this document, it is believed that one can judge a person’s characteristics and personality as well as harness the ability of predicting one’s future. Many cultures including the Sri Lankans, Indians, Chinese and Mayans have attached great importance to this aspect of life and as a result, they have adopted intricate systems and calculations from which one can predict certain changes and the turn of events in one’s life. Astrology is often linked with spirituality and while it may faintly resemble a science, it is often considered as a pseudoscience because of the fact that astrology seems to have no interest in developing solutions to the many questions that it comes across.
What is the difference between astrology and astronomy?
Astronomy and astrology were essentially one and the same for a very long time in the human of mankind, but the two started to diverge during the Renaissance period in the 14th – 17th Centuries. Astrology and astronomy both consider the study of stars, planets and other celestial objects and yet, the way in which these objects are seen and analyzed is very different. Astrology studies the movement and the position of the planets with the belief that they yield the power to influence events that occur in the human world. However, astronomy does not have such a belief and instead, it seeks to study these planetary objects in a more scientific angle.
Astronomy is considered as a science whereas astrology is considered as a pseudoscience on the basis that it does not seek to provide answers to the problems that it encounters on the way. However, once astronomy discovers a certain phenomenon or an event, astrophysicists conduct further investigations in to it which is then delivered to the astronomists who confirm the theories. Each step and each process is documented while each step also has documented evidence and proof to prove the facts. Astrology on the other hand, is not backed by such theories. No arguments or debates ensue regarding these theories and it is not backed on a scientific scale.
