Mathematics have long since existed since the beginning of the civilization itself as man made various attempts to understand various phenomena which took place in the universe around him. However, mathematics is a complex subject that is comprised of various sub genres, two of which can be stated as arithmetic and geometry.
What is arithmetic?
Derived from the Greek word ‘arithmos’ which means number, arithmetic is perhaps the most widely used branch of mathematics that is used by almost everyone in almost any walk of life. It is also the oldest and the most elementary form of mathematics which involves the study of quantity. Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that is utilized when it comes to day to day calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with smaller values of numbers, but it can also be used for other more complex computations such as the number theory which is an advanced form of mathematics than the elementary arithmetic that one often uses.
What is geometry?
Derived from the Greek words ‘geo’which means earth and ‘metria’ which means measurement, geometry is an essential branch of mathematics that is useful in measuring the shape, size, relative position of figures and the properties of space. The history of geometry goes as far as the 6th century BC to Thales while geometry was subjected to an axiomatic form by Euclid. Geometry later on emerged as a practical science concerned with surveying, measurements, areas, and volumes. Various formulas such as Pythagorean theorem, circumference and area of a circle, area of a triangle, volume of a cylinder, sphere and a pyramid are found which are thus used for many arts and purposes such as architecture, construction, navigation and surveying.
What is the difference between geometry and arithmetic?
The two branches of mathematics, geometry and arithmetic are different from one another in many ways. First and foremost, the most prominent factor which sets them apart is the way in which they are calculated. Arithmetic is calculated by adding up all the numbers in a data set which is then divided by the total number of data points. Geometry on the other hand, is calculated by multiplying the numbers in the data set and taking the nth root of the result, where “n” is the total number of data points in the set.
While arithmetic was used by almost all civilizations such as the Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Indian, it was from Central Africa that the 22,000 year old Ishango bone was discovered with evidence of the prehistoric man’s knowledge of addition and subtraction. Geometry on the other hand was more popular with the building nations such as the Indus Valley, the Egyptians and the Mesopotamians who were keen on erecting large scale buildings and towns. However, it was Euclid after almost 3000 years who interpreted these codes and recorded them in nine volumes. However, the dark ages which had an adverse effect on many arts and technologies of the human kind had its toll on geometry too and yet, it was kept alive by the Arabs while geometry was reintroduced during the renaissance in Europe and was developed in to calculus in later ages.
The most striking difference between the arithmetic and geometry is the fact that while arithmetic deals with numbers, geometry deals with shapes, lines and measurements. Arithmetic is used in day to day activities such as balancing a check book, figuring out the bill at a restaurant or a supermarket to other more complex functions such as calculus, algebra and geometry. Geometry on the other hand is used more often for navigation, surveying, architecture and construction purposes. However, both arithmetic and geometry have been relied on heavily when developing the calculus method.
