Difference between anxiety and worry
Anxiety vs worry:
Anxiety and worry are two sentiments which are common to all. One gets anxious when something that he or she is not used to happens and one gets worried when something is not going according to plan and is fearful of what might come to pass. And yet, worry and anxiety that lasts a long time can cause problems in the long run which may even lead to severe mental health issues. Therefore, it is important that one recognizes anxiety and worry separately from one another.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety can be generally defined as a feeling of discomfort prior to doing something. It is situational and is often based on a previous experience of the individual which he or she has deemed as being unpleasant or dangerous. It is often manifested in the form of severe nervousness, the anticipation of a negative outcome of a situation. A person suffering from anxiety may avoid a situation which makes him or her feel uneasy to the point that it makes even simple activities in his or her day to day life rendered unachievable.
What is worry?
Worry occurs as a result of troublesome thoughts which trigger the emotional brain and generates constructive reflection which enables the individual to evaluate the problem and thereby, come to a conclusion which will eventually solve the problem. There are several advantages in worrying as well. For example, when one is worried due to the sensation of being threatened, he or she may assess his or her options which will help the individual come to a conclusion. Moreover, in imagining the worst case scenario, worrying will only leave a temporary mark on the mind instead of a permanent scar. Also, worry has the ability of suppressing physiological effects of anxiety as worrying includes preoccupying the mind with a plethora of thoughts that one will not have room for anxious sensations. But on the other hand, too much worrying is a sure fire sign of anxiety disorder.
What is the difference between worry and anxiety?
Anxiety and worry are considered as universal emotions and it is normal for an individual to feel worried or anxious from time to time. and yet, too much of anxiety can cause problems such as leading to generalized anxiety disorder which is characterized by unreasonable anxiety which can cause many problems. Unlike the normal sentiment of worry, individuals with GAD are not able to control themselves and are not therefore able to think clearly. They exhibit physical symptoms as well such as dizziness, insomnia, inability to concentrate, headaches, etc. and yet, people with worry do not show such physical symptoms.
Worry is advantageous in numerous ways that an individual who has a worry is able to evaluate their options, engage in constructive reflection and is able to come to a conclusion as a result. And yet, people suffering from anxiety experience a completely negative experience. They are trapped in a daily continuous cycle of worry and anxiety and also, it leads to obsessing about a certain thing that the inflexibility and unrealistic perceptions hinder a person’s creativity to come to a feasible solution. Therefore, one can say while worry is a universal emotion which provides plenty of advantages whereas anxiety is a completely negative experience for an individual.
