Difference between anxiety and nervousness
Anxiety vs nervousness:
Humans are capable of experiencing a wide range of feelings and emotions, depending upon the kind of situation or the experiences that they face in their day to day lives. Each of these feelings and emotions are given names in order to differentiate one from the other. Anxiety and nervousness are two such emotions which an individual may experience from time to time in their day to day lives. Both these emotions are very closely linked because of which the signs and symptoms that the two conditions portray seem very much similar. Because of this similarity in nature, anxiety and nervousness often get confused with one another very easily in a person’s mind.
What is anxiety?
Derived from the word “angst” which stands for anger or pain, anxiety can be generally defined as a feeling of discomfort prior to doing something. It is situational and is often based on a previous experience of the individual which he or she has deemed as being unpleasant or dangerous. It is often manifested in the form of severe nervousness, the anticipation of a negative outcome of a situation. A person suffering from anxiety may avoid a situation which makes him or her feel uneasy to the point that it makes even simple activities in his or her day to day life rendered unachievable. While anxiety is a general emotion which is common to all, anxiety is also quite capable of developing itself in to a disorder which can be very detrimental to both mental and physical health alike.
What is nervousness?
Nervousness is characterized by an individual getting highly and unnaturally excited during a stressful situation in his or her life. Nervousness manifests itself in the form of dryness of the mouth, temporary mental confusion, trouble in memory recall, fidgeting and initial increase in heart rate which is known to subside in a very short time. These symptoms are known to disappear after the stressful task at hand has been completed. Nervousness often occurs when it is required for an individual to push out of his or her comfort zone and venture out in to the unknown. Additional factors such as alcohol dependency, excessive caffeine intake, drug use, allergies, hormonal imbalance, pre menstrual syndrome and cigarette smoking are known to contribute heavily towards nervousness.
What is the difference between nervousness and anxiety?
Anxiety and nervousness are indeed closely related cousins as anxiety can often be seen as a heightened form of nervousness which lasts for a longer period of time. However, the causes and the seriousness of the two conditions differ very largely. For instance, the symptoms which indicate anxiety and nervousness are indeed very much related and yet, these signs vary largely from one condition to another. The symptoms of nervousness include light-headedness, dryness of the mouth, temporary mental confusion, trouble in memory recall, fidgeting and an increased heart rate which lasts for a shorter period of time whereas the symptoms of anxiety include a feeling of unreasonable dread, trembling, nausea, excessive perspiration in addition to all the symptoms that are manifested during a bout of nervousness.
The symptoms manifested in nervousness are known to subside fairly quickly whereas the symptoms of anxiety tend to last longer and have a destructive effect upon the organs as well. The stress hormone named cortisol which is released during times of anxiety is known to be corrosive as it damages organs as well as being responsible for weight gain around the midriff which results in visceral fat. Visceral fat is known to surround the abdominal organs thereby increasing the risk of cardio-vascular disease and type II diabetes as well. Therefore, it is easy to see that anxiety indeed has more dire consequences than nervousness which is relatively harmless when compared to anxiety.
Nervousness is mostly situational and yet, anxiety can develop itself in to a disorder which could be chronic in nature. Anxiety can even manifest itself through social phobia, panic attacks and generalized anxiety disorder whereas nervousness does not tend to be having such a grander effect on an individual. However, nervousness and anxiety both can be treated with the correct sort of medicine and meditation as a means of relaxing the mind is said to be beneficial for both the conditions. Anti-anxiety medication such as Benzodiazephines, psychotherapy and counseling are the most recommended treatment for anxiety disorders as accepted worldwide.
