Antigens and antibodies are two terms that have caused plenty of confusion in the minds of many training medicals. The regular layperson has even been led to think that antigens and antibodies stand for the one and the same and yet, this is a false assumption as they stand for completely different things.
What are antigens?
An antigen can be defined as a substance that provoke an immune response in the human body thereby creating antibodies. It is referred to as an antibody generator which activate Immune Cells depending on the type of antigen presented which leads to prompt response from the immune system.
Antigens are made of proteins or polysaccharides, cell walls, capsules, flagella, toxins of bacteria, chemical or viruses that attack the immune system. There exists three types of antigens such as Dendritic Cells, Macrophages and B-cells.
What are antibodies?
An antibody, which is also known as immunoglobulins, can be defined as the proteins that are secreted as a result of the antigen provoked immune response and thus work to inactivate foreign particles. They are usually Y shaped molecules which usually goes and binds itself to the specific antigen thereby working to retard it and eliminate the threat posed by the antigen. There are five types of antibodies such as Immunoglobulin M, Immunoglobulin G, Immunoglobulin E, Immunoglobulin and Immunoglobulin A. Antibodies develop from plasma cells in the blood.
What is the difference between antibodies and antigens?
Quite plainly spoken, antigen is the cause for the disease whereas the antibody is the cure. An atigen can be defined as a substance that provoke an immune response in the human body which activate Immune Cells in to the creation of antibodies. An antibody can be defined as a Y shaped molecule which is secreted as a result of the antigen provoked immune response and ultimately works towards deactivating the harmful antigen as a result.
Both antigen and antibody are paramount for immunology as both are important for the activation of the human immune system. They are both microscopic particles which contain proteins and yet while antigens contain polysaccharides in addition to the protein, antibodies are made up of pure gamma globulin proteins that are contained in the various body fluids and the blood stream in all vertebrates.
The purpose of antibodies in to bind and deactivate all the foreign particles including the antigens in the body which pose as a threat to the human system. And yet, the antigen serves as the stimulator of the immune system, stirring up an alertness which initiates an immediate immune response and thus leads to the creation of antibodies. Because of this reason, it is also referred to as an antibody generator.
