Anatomy vs physiology:
Anatomy and physiology are most undoubtedly closely related as they both belong to the common field of biology. Anatomy and physiology are taught alongside each other in most cases as a result of their proximity to each other. Both fields involve the study of the human body and they both have been studied and researched from time immemorial. However, it must be said that despite their similarities, anatomy and physiology are two completely different studies of which the differences must be correctly evaluated in order to understand their connection more easily.
Anatomy, plainly said, is a study which centers on dissection as it concentrates on the physical structure of the body. This includes the study of the size, shape, and location of structures in the body which are sometimes observed with the naked eye and sometimes under magnification with a microscope for more detail. Anatomists take immense care to document every single detail that they come across as a single slip of the eye or the failure to notice even the slightest detail could result in great confusion and turmoil. Anatomy has two sub branches which are known as microscopic anatomy and macroscopic anatomy which is also known as gross anatomy. Microscopic anatomy refers to the study of the physical appearance of cellular structures which needs to be observed with the aid of a microscope whereas macroscopic anatomy focuses on things that can be seen by the naked eye.
Physiology is the study and the explanation of different parts and organs of the human body. It examines how different organs, different cells and different systems inside the body correspond and relate to each other and the manner in which organisms, organs and cells work in relation with various body parts as physiology deals with the chemical components that are found inside the system. A physiologist works with living parts such as living tissue and the like in order to understand the certain activity such as the release of neurotransmitters and the storage of energy in the human cells.
What is the difference between physiology and anatomy?
Physiology and anatomy have always walked hand in hand throughout history as they have always been subjects of great interest that piqued the curiosity of many even from the very olden days. They have always been studied together as a proper understanding of anatomy is deemed as necessary in order to understand the way in which physiology works. However, both are very different subjects which vary in a number of different ways. For instance, physiology deals with the explanation of the functions of individual organism as well as systems inside the human body whereas anatomy deals with the structure of the human body itself. Physiology tries to understand the way in which certain organs interact with each other and how the chemical components inside the body function. Anatomy on the other hand examines the shape, size and the location of certain organs and structures which would often involve dissection or the cutting up of the carcasses of humans and animals in order to reveal what lies within. Therefore, while anatomy deals mostly with dead beings, physiology involves working with actual living things.
Anatomy is considered as a static study whereas physiology is more dynamic as it involves the observation of chemical, physical, and electrical processes which make an organism function. For example, while the location of a human being’s digestive tract would almost always be similar, the complex systems involved in visual perception or the processes which regulate heart rate could be very different from one person to another. However, both studies can be conducted with the aid of dissection, medical imaging techniques and laboratory analysis of samples from specimens. Both anatomy and physiology are areas of intense interest to many a medical professional who endorses in all medical practices of diverse areas.
