Difference between amplification and retransmission
Amplification vs Retransmission:
In age where everything functions according to electromagnetic signals, optical or sound, the transmission of signals is of utmost importance. And yet, due to the fragile nature of these signals, certain methods are in order to enhance them so that they will reach their intended destinations effectively without any hindrance to the quality of the signal. This is where amplification and retransmission comes in.
What is amplification?
Amplification functions as an enhancement of the signal and this is considered as the most simplest form of increasing the strength of the signal. It functions in real time and works in instantly outputting the inputted signal, thus enhancing its quality. And yet, the amplifier is unable to detect the differences between noise or signal which results in the amplifier increasing the noise power as well. It is well suited for transmitting large signals which only require short distance travel.
What is retransmission?
Retransmission also works as a method of enhancing signals and yet, it is a more complicated method which involves a complex of steps which requires extracting the information from the input signal and then resending the signal as an entirely new one. It is also able to duplicate the signal on multiple lines which enables transmission for a wider scope. Also, it is able to distinguish between the signal and the noise thus enhancing the signal and transmitting that while leaving the noise behind. And yet, perhaps due to the complexity of the procedure, retransmission involves a certain amount of delay in sending the signals. Therefore, it is best suited for transmitting digital data systems which require to travel long distances.
What is the difference between retransmission and amplification?
When comparing the two methods, amplification is perhaps the most simplest way of enhancing and strengthening a signal more than retransmission. While amplification works in such a way that simply enhances the signal power in order for it to reach its intended target effectively, the process of retransmitting requires a complicated procedure of extracting the information from the signals received, enhancing it and again sending it out as a new signal altogether.
And yet, amplification is considered as the more quicker method of the two procedures as the input signal is automatically and instantaneously delivered whereas retransmission lags behind to a certain extent. This is due to the fact that the extraction of information from the input signal takes time to be reconstructed and enhanced as a brand new signal altogether whereas in amplification, it does not require to do such a thing.
And yet, amplification is not able to recognize signal from sound which causes problems at times. Therefore, instead of recognizing the signal and strengthening and increasing the signal alone, it tends to also strengthen and empower the sound which can be quite disturbing and lead to muffled and unintelligible signals. Yet, the retransmission procedure is very well able to distinguish the difference between the two and is able to extract only the signal, enhance it and then retransmit the signal alone leaving the noise behind.
Another advantage of retransmission is that it is able to duplicate the signal on multiple lines which thus endows it with the power to cover a much larger area. And yet, if one tries to duplicate the signal on multiple lines in amplification, the sound too shall get duplicated which will lead to worsening the problem.
Therefore, amplification is considered as being more suitable for large signals which only require to travel a short distance whereas retransmission is considered as being more suitable for the transmission of digital data system that require to travel long distances as this would ensure the much needed accuracy of the data.
