Difference between AMOLD and TFT
AMOLD vs TFT:
While touchscreen phones are all the rage is these days, it is also important as to which kind of touch screen that these mobile phones possess. AMOLD and TFT are two such displays which are commonly used in mobile phones. Thus, this article seeks to differentiate between the two models by first providing a general description of them both.
What is AMOLD?
Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode better known as AMOLD is a favorite screen amongst many as it is made of organic based led and is well known for its brightness. It does not rely on a back light and therefore provides its own light instead and also in AMOLD, each pixel’s color and light intensity can be regulated independently. It is also known to consume a lesser amount of energy and yet, it has a shorter life span than most other displays which is a blatant disadvantage of AMOLD.
What is TFT?
Thin Film Transistor or better known as TFT is also a display which touchscreen phones use. It relies on a back light as a result of which the color schemes are not that impressive with TFT. And yet, under sunlight, they are known to offer superior legibility under along with better colors. And yet, TFT is the touchscreen which has been around for a longer period of time and is therefore, still very much popular and in demand.
What is the deference between TFT and AMOLD?
While both are used in touchscreen mobile phones, many differences exist between the two which sets them apart. For example, while AMOLD is made of organic based led, TFT is more of a touchscreen LCD. Also, while AMOLD tends to be much thinner than most of LCD displays, TFT tends to be slightly thicker.
AMOLD does not rely on a backlight for its lighting. Instead, it provides a light of its own. This leads to several advantages. The colors appear more brighter as each pixel’s color and light intensity can be regulated independently. Yet, TFT depends on a back light and therefore displays poor color quality. And yet, under sunlight, TFT is known to offer superior legibility under along with better colors whereas the AMOLD tends to over saturate the colors which in turn decreases the color accuracy of the displayed image.
The other advantage of not using a back light is that AMOLD consumes less power whereas TFT is known to consume more. Preserving battery power is very important in using a mobile as a battery often has very limited power from which the mobile functions. Specifically in a touchscreen phone, the display is on about 90% of the time and therefore, the fact that AMOLD does not rely on a back light to function helps save quite a lot of enrgy at the same time providing better picture quality as well.
And yet, AMOLD is known to have a shorter life time span than that of TFT. This is due to the fact that each pixel degrades each second that it has been lit and the brighter it is lit, the quicker it degrades. And also, TFT is the older form of display that came in to the industry way before the AMOLD and it therefore, outnumbers the production number of the AMOLD screens single-handedly.
