While both beverages are considered as favorites among many, there are many differences in terms of flavor, the ingredients added and also the nutritional value of these two beverages. It is important to take a look at these two beverages separately in order to differentiate between the two.
What is almond milk?
Almond milk is made using the liquid that is derived from ground almond and contains no lactose or cholesterol like animal milk. One can find almond milk in flavors such as strawberry, chocolate and vanilla in stores whereas it is also possible to make almond milk at home by combining water and almonds in a blender. Almond milk was a basic beverage in medieval households as cow’s milk spoils quickly and it was often alternated with almond milk which does not deteriorate as easily.
What is soy milk?
Also called soya bean milk, soya milk, soybean milk and soy juice, soya milk is made from grinding the dry soya beans together with water. It has almost as much of a potein conten as cow’s milk. The origin of soya milk stretches its roots as far as to AD 25-220 China.
Soya milk can also be made in to soya bean tofu which is made from coagulated protein from the soya milk.
Difference between soya milk and almond milk
While Soy milk has more proteins than almond milk, almond milk has less fats and sugar than any other type of non-dairy milk. Soya milk has an acquired taste while almond milk has a natural, light taste. Also, soy milk can be used as a salad dressing, pasta sauce and even for mashed potatoes. Both are lactose free but soya milk is known to have more calories than almond milk. While soya milk is considered to have around 110 calories per serve, almond milk only carries 90 calories per serve.
Almond Milk carries high levels of vitamin E, selenium and manganese whereas the isoflavones contained in soy milk resemble the hormone estrogen which in turn will reduce the chances of cancer and osteoporosis. But an excessive cntent of Isoflavones from soy milk can also be the cause for thyroid disorder, leukemia and breast cancer.
Almond milk encourages a better performance of the parathyroid gland which in turn secures an individual with strong bones. Soya milk is considered as a good alternative for milk, eggs or chicken while an excessive consumption of soy is said to have the capacity to trigger stomach problems, abdominal cancers and other forms of cancers. Whereas almond milk is considered as an inadequate option for an infant’s diet, soy milk is considered as harmful for babies.
Also whereas the brands manufacturing soy milk may include more sugar, flavor and other chemicals in the product than required, the natural flavor in almond milk prevents the need for adding artificial flavors which will destroy the natural quality of the beverage. While almond milk is considered as harmful for those who are diagnosed with low thyroid functions, soy milk has the ability to cause abnormalities in the reproductive tract which can even lead to infertility .
Both these highly nutrious beverages have their own advantages and disadvantages. While keeping in mind that an excessive consumption of anything can prove harmful to one’s helth, moderate amount of these wondrous products can do wonders for one’s health.
