Batteries are the main sources of power for many gadgets and machinery that are being used worldwide. Batteries which did not consist of considerable amounts of power in the olden days have come a formidable way today to the production of more durable, long lasting batteries. Batteries are of many sorts of which alkaline and lithium batteries are merely two types. While these two types of batteries serve similar purposes, there are certain dissimilarities which set them apart.
What are alkaline batteries?
An alkaline battery is produced with a base of alkali and it is basically an electrochemical cell composed of a zinc powder anode and a manganese dioxide cathode which produces electricity through a chemical reaction. While the typical voltage of an alkaline battery is 1.5 V, a combination of two or more batteries can be used to generate more power as required. The alkaline batteries come in many different sizes such as AA, AA-, AAA,etc, which determines the strength of the current produced by the battery. While there are reusable alkaline batteries which can be recharged after use and can be used again, certain alkaline batteries have to be disposed of after a single use. It is advisable that the batteries should be disposed of in a responsible manner as the leaking the inside potassium hydroxide electrolyte could potentially cause skin and respiratory irritation.

Lithium batteries use a base of lithium salts and they utilize lithium metal or compounds as their anode by which they generate energy. Lithium batteries come in many voltages which can be as low as 1.5V as depending on the design itself. While lithium batteries are generally believed as not rechargeable, certain devices such as mobile phones, laptops, music players, gaming devices and other devices which require more energy are known to utilize lithium-ion batteries which are rechargeable. As lithium batteries are considered as toxic, it is advisable that they should be handled and disposed of with care.
What is the difference between lithium and alkaline batteries?
The main difference between lithium and alkaline batteries lie in the components that they utilize in generating power. While alkaline batteries are known to use zinc and manganese oxide for this purpose, lithium batteries utilize lithium metal or compounds as their anode by which they generate energy. Also, while the typical voltage of an alkaline battery is 1.5V, the lithium battery comes in higher voltages depending on the design and therefore, they carry more power without having to use multiple batteries to produce a large amount of energy for longer periods of time. And because of this reason, lithium batteries are generally more expensive than the regular alkaline battery.
While alkaline batteries are used for devises such as torches, portable radios, clocks, and remotes which do not consume an excessive amount of energy, lithium batteries are used for devises which require larger amounts of power to function such as mobile phones, laptops, music players, gaming devices, digital cameras, etc. While both batteries come in rechargeable forms, rechargeable alkaline batteries are quite rare whereas rechargeable lithium batteries are known as lithium-ion batteries. However, lithium-ion batteries are not the same as lithium batteries which are not rechargeable.
Also, while alkaline batteries can be quite easily identified and replaced easily, finding the suitable lithium battery is quite hard. The reason for this is that while alkaline batteries come in a standard size, shape and qualities, the standards of a lithium battery varies according to its manufacturers. Therefore, special care must be administered in choosing a lithium battery to replace another as there is a high possibility of making blunders in choosing the correct lithium battery for the correct devise.
