Difference between algebra and calculus
Algebra vs calculus:
While mathematics is an indispensable subject on which the mere existence of almost all the components of the world depends on, because of the many complexities that one encounters during the study of its course, it also happens to be one of the most dreaded subjects among students. Algebra and calculus are two such branches of mathematics which have managed to get incorporated in to one’s day to day life as well as serving more complex purposes which require a higher degree of sophistication.
Algebra can be described as a branch of pure mathematics which is responsible for operations and relations of mathematics and their respective rules when it comes to solving equations. Algebra studies polynomials, equations and algebraic structures as well as the terms, constructions and concepts that arise from mathematical operations. It uses letters to represent numbers which are thus combined according to certain rules that apply to mathematics. Different forms of algebra such as Abstract Algebra, Linear algebra, Universal algebra, algebraic geometry and elementary algebra exist in the world of mathematics. Elementary algebra is taught to individuals at a very young age as it is a very simple form of algebra whereas abstract algebra deals with algebraic structures such as groups, rings and fields. Linear algebra on the other hand, studies the properties of vector spaces and matrices while universal algebra investigates in to common properties in algebraic structures.
Calculus is a more modern branch of mathematics which studies function, limits, derivative and integrals and infinite series, thereby studying change. Calculus lays the foundation to more complex forms of mathematics which are used in science, economics, engineering, physical and computer science, business, medicine and other fields which involve the determination of certain factors such as the cost of production, supply and demand, temperature, pressure and such matters which require a high degree of analysis. Calculus operates on the “rate of change” which aids in determining the ways in which variables change and fluctuate in relation to others. Calculus is of two kinds such as differential calculus and integral calculus.
What is the difference between calculus and algebra?
Calculus and algebra are both branches of mathematics which are commonly used in everyday life, sometimes together and sometimes individually in certain cases. However, algebra remains the one of the oldest branches of mathematics which is also considered as a most basic of its branches whereas calculus is considered to be relatively modern. Calculus also lays the foundation to more complex mathematical foundations and therefore, it is considered to be a much more advanced form of mathematics than algebra. As a result, algebra is used in solving day to day common issues whereas calculus is utilized in solving other more complex issues such as engineering concepts and equations.
Algebra deals with the relation that exists between things whereas calculus studies the rate of change which helps determine the way in which the change of one component affects the change in relation to others. Furthermore, calculus is used in matters that cannot be solved by algebra and is therefore, often taught at a more advanced stage in studies whereas algebra is taught at a very elementary stage to students.
