Ailments and diseases both require medical attention and can be quite injurious to health. Although these two terms are often used synonymously because of their apparent similarity, it is wrong to do so. These two terms possess significant differences which sets them apart.
What is an ailment?
An ailment can be defined as a symptomatic behavioral or physical illness. Ailments are usually not very serious but there is a chance that certain ailments can develop in to more serious diseases which can cause significant body harm. Also, some ailments can merely be symptoms of a more serious illness within the body which needs immediate attention. Yet, a typical ailment goes away on its own without causing significant harm to the body. Some examples of ailments would be headaches, coughs, colds, stomach problems, allergies, heartburn, migraine, acidity, constipation etc.
What is a disease?
Diseases are more serious scenarios which occur due to malfunctions of body organs due to external agencies like microbes or internal release of bio chemicals or damage, etc. therefore, it is imperative to seek medical attention when disease symptoms have been detected as diseases are more widespread illnesses which require more serious remedies and even surgery sometimes. Disease can be both infectious and non-infectious diseases and it even includes disorders, syndromes, etc. diseases can again be categorized as psychological diseases, deficiency diseases, hereditary diseases and pathogenic diseases.
What is the difference between a disease and an ailment?
While an ailment is considered as less serious, a disease is considered to be more of a serious case. An ailment can usually be treated by simple and homemade remedies but they also go away with time. And yet, diseases cannot be treated with simple homemade remedies. And if left untreated, a disease can even prove to be fatal and therefore, once a symptom of a disease manifests itself, it is advisable to seek medical attention.

Therefore, ailments need not be treated for a long term while a disease requires long term medical assistance and treatment. And yet, some ailments can prove to develop in to more serious diseases and some ailments can even be manifestations of more serious diseases which reside within a person’s body. Therefore , it is advised that a persisting ailment should be given the due medical attention and care.
