Advertising vs marketing:
Advertising and marketing both serve the same purpose of enhancing the customers’ awareness of a product or a service which in turn will result in the enhancement of the sales of that particular service or product. Even though both these things serve the same purpose, there are many subtle differences to these two terms.
Advertising
Advertising can be classified as a sub division of marketing. Advertising is known as the usage of non-personal and paid communication of mediums such as the television, the radio or the newspapers to make the public aware of a product or a service offered by a company. It is an aspect of marketing where an advertising firm is paid to publicize the product or the service in hope of increasing its sales. Yet the advertising agency is by no means interested in the outcome of their campaign. They simply provide the sponsor what is asked of them and is not concerned in the increase of the sales or the increase of the popularity of the product, the service or the company.
Marketing
Marketing on the other hand, is a much broader concept. It is best described as the systematic planning, implementation and control of a mix of business activities, developing, branding and designing the product or service, doing research on the targeted clientele, designing the product or the service to fit into the habits of the target customers and etc. Marketing is an overall process which is also an overall tool which helps to build a business. It tracks down the progressive improvement of the strategies developed by the marketing firm itself which includes product design and benefits, pricing and expected performance of the product, media planning (which is where the advertising comes in) and strategies to associate the product with the public, customer assistance systems and the like.
Difference between Advertising and Marketing
The difference between marketing and advertising can be best described as an orange. Marketing is the whole orange while advertising is just a segment of the orange which is grouped together with other segments such as market research, public relations, product pricing, community involvement, sales strategy and etc. It is of utmost importance that these segments function well independently and it is even more important that they work perfectly together in order to produce the best results. If one segment of the orange goes rotten, it is most likely that the whole orange would be quite unpleasant and that it would probably not hold its shape together as an orange and fall away. Therefore, one could say that advertising is a small part of marketing which is a rather vast process that covers a whole range of strategies.
