Difference between adaptation and evolution
adaptation vs evolution:
Life on earth remains as it is today because of these two words, adaptation and evolution, which is also the principal cause of our existence today on earth. While some adapt, some evolve and the human kind and also other life forms on earth are still evolving as we speak. While these two words often go together in a similar platform, there are some major differences between these two words which are noteworthy.
What is adaptation?
In terms of biology, adaptation is depicted as a crucial trait which had contributed greatly towards the evolutionary process. Certain organisms face a procession of environmental changes, threats and menaces in the process of growing and in response for these changes and threats, they develop certain traits and qualities which equip them with the ability to survive through these conditions which can quite harsh. It is the adaptations which contribute towards the fitness and the survival of organisms. While this process increases their resilience to live in a certain type of environment under certain conditions, they are even equipped with special traits which make their life easier for this type of conditions. One can point out the copious amount of fur that a polar bear has which aids in keeping them warm or the layer of fat that the duck possesses which in turn help them float on the surface of water.
What is evolution?
Evolution is a life long process. It can be depicted as the kind of change that occurs generations in the heritable characteristics of biological populations.life on earth today is in its present for because of this evolution process which has been taking place for centuries and life on earth is still on the process of evolving. We human beings too are a product of evolution from homo erectus to homo sapiens and it is said that we too are still evolving. there are many people who introduced theories on evolution and it is Charles Darwin’s theory on natural selection which is considered as the most important and the most relevant theory as of today.
What is the difference between evolution and adaptation?
The processes evolution and adaptation are bothe of extreme importance for sustaining life on earth and these two terms often go hand in hand in this process. And yet, they are two different things which bear many differences despite the fact that these two words are often discussed together.
Adaptation is referred to as the process in which certain organisms develop certain traits, qualities and adapt to the many environmental changes that take place in their habitats. This could be the development of certain defence mechanisms in response to certain threats that they undergo, certain bodily traits which are necessary to sustain their health throughout the constantly changing weather conditions, etc. and yet, evolution refers to the kind of change that occurs generations in the heritable characteristics of biological populations. Evolution is a gradual process which occurs for whole generations and populations of species over the course of centuries. Therefore, while certain species can undergo the process of adaptation individually, evolution happens for a larger group of species, such as generations and whole populations. Also, adaptation is a relatively shorter occurrence while evolutions spans over the course of centuries.
