Difference between acrylic and latex paint

acrylic paint vs latex paint:

Both acrylic and latex paints stand on common grounds in terms of their purpose and yet, there are certain differences between the two kinds of paints that set them apart. Thus, this article seeks to explore those differences at the same time explore their similarities as well which would in turn lead to a better understanding of the two paints.

What is acrylic paint?
Commonly used for artistic purposes such as creating paintings on canvas, acrylic paint varies in consistency from a toothpaste-like thickness to cake frosting-fluid. acrylic paint posesses a chemical composition that gives it a sort of elasticity and because of its expandable quality when faced with the heat or the cold, the paints that are used to painting the outside of houses turn more and more towards using a 100% acrylic based paint. Acrylic paints are also considered as toxic and flammable because of their chemical properties.

What is latex paint?
Latex paint can be pointed out as a general term which covers all paints that use synthetic polymers such as acrylic, vinyl acrylic (PVA), styrene acrylic, etc and is water-based in nature. Used commonly for decorating houses, latex is a commercial paint which has a heavy cream consistency which makes it easy for application. Latex paints are relatively cheap and are readily available anywehere and in the UK, latex is refeered to as emulsion but it is the same kind of paint that is referreed to as latex in the US.

What is the difference between latex and acrylic?
While both the paints share the common fact of being produced from acrylic resin, these two paints cannot be more different. While both are used for painting, latex paint is used in decorating houses, painting the interiors and exteriors whwreas acrylic paints are more in use for artistic purposes such as painting on canvas. Also, while latex has a water base, acrylic has a chemical base which makes it toxic and flammable wheras latex is not .

Latex paint is much less expensive and is readily available anywhere such as supermarkets, stores, etc. yet, acrylic paint is more expensive and can only be obtained at crafts stores. Also, while all latex paints come in the heavy cream consistency which makes it easier to apply on walls, acrylic paint comes in a variety of consistencies which vary from toothpaste-like to cake frosting fluid.

The quantity in which latex painst and acrylic paints are supplied too varies hugely. While latex paints are sold iin quart-, one-gallon and five-gallon containers, acrylic paint is sold in 2- or 5-oz. tubes, pints, quarts and one-gallon containers. This is done so because one needs bigger quantities when decorating a house whereas for artistic purposes, one does not need so much.

Another factor is that latex dries much quicker than acrylic paints and is also much easier to apply. Also, when it comes to removing paints, latex removes easily with soap and water whereas acrylic should be removed with a thinner. Also, while latex painst are considered as providing better coverage with only a fewer coats, acrylic painst are becoming more and more popular for the usuage of outside decorating purposes of houses as they have a way of expanding when met with heat or the cold.

Summary

  • Acrylic paints are used for artistic purposes while latex is used for painting houses.
  • Acrylic paints have chemical base while latex paints are water based.
  • Acrylic paints are toxic and flammable and also, more expensive.
