Difference between Achilles and Agamemnon
Achilles Vs Agamemnon:
While the characters Achilles and Agamemnon are linked by their connection to Greek mythology and their contribution to the infamous Trojan war, these two epic characters who had been mentioned in legends time and time again remain immortal even today. However different these two characters may be from each others, they still continue to confound many because of the common grounds they stand on.
Who is Agamemnon?
Agamemnon, as mentioned in the Greek mythology, is the king who conducted the great Trojan war that had created many a legend and has provided the base for many great literary masterpieces which had graced the world literature during the years. He is known as the son of King Atreus and Queen Aerope of Mycenae, the brother of Menelaus, the husband of Clytemnestra, and the father of Electra and Orestes and is famed as the ruthless king who conducted the raid of Troy which was thus launched in order to bring back Helen, his brother’s wife who was abducted by Prince Paris of Troy. Yet, as mentioned in the Odyssey, book 11, King Agamemnon was murdered by his wife Clytemnestra’s lover, Aegisthus, upon his return from Troy.
Who is Achilles?
Achilles is stated as the central character and the hero of Homer’s illiad, the great Greek warrior of Trojan war as mentioned in the Greek mythology. He is said to be the the son of the nymph Thetis and Peleus, the king of the Myrmidons and it is said that his mother Thetis dipped Achillesin the river Styx in order to make him immortal and as a result he possesses superhuman strength. He is said to be invulnerable in body except for his heel by which his mother held him when she dipped him in the river. As a result, he is said to have died because of a small wound in his heel.
What is the difference between Agamemnon and Achilles?
Although these two epic characters share the common grounds of Greek Mythology and the Trojan war, they are two distinct characters who are of extreme importance in their own specific ways. One difference is that while Agamemnon is the great king who was born to royalty, Achilles was a warrior. Also, while
Agamemnon was born to human parents and possessed no superhuman capabilities, Achilles was born to a sea nymph and a human because of which he possesses superhuman caliber and invulnerability of body.
While Agamemnon led the great battle of Troy to rescue Helen who had been abducted by Prince Paris, Achilles is a warrior who fought in the Trojan war which eventually earned him the name hero of the Trojan war. It is said that the greater part of the victory over Troy was due to the great dexterity and skill of Achilles while Agamemnon merely initiated the mission.
Also, while Agamemnon was killed by his wife Clytemnestra’s lover, Aegisthus, upon his return from Troy, it is said that Achilles died in during the battle of Troy from battle wounds. While Achilles’s body was deemed invulnerable except his heel, he is said to have died from a wound that he acquired in his heel during the battle.
