Difference between accident and incident
accident and incident:
While accidents and incidents are common in our day to day life, it may be quite confusing to distinguish the difference between an accident and an incident sometimes. Therefore, this article seeks to make that clear cut distinction between the two words at the same time, providing the readers with comprehensible definitions of each of the two words.
What is an accident?
An accident can be something of negative consequences. It could be an unexpected and most of all an undesirable event which causes harm to someone or something in return. For example, one can take a car accident, a boating accident or an accident at work which may have caused bodily harm to a person. An accident is often unforeseen and doesn’t always necessarily have to be negative. For example one can say that a series of happy accidents paved the way to this occasion. An accident may also be an occasion which happened quite unexpectedly and is often used to describe occasions which involve the unexpected urination of a person in one’s cloths itself. An accident in that sense can mean a situation which occurred without the intention of it happening like that. For example, one can say that he or she ran in to a friend by accident that day.
What is an incident?
There are many synonyms for incident which includes occurrence, event, occasion, etc. an incident can be generally defined as either a positive or a negative event wich is also separate and definite and which has interrupted the normal procedure or precipitates a certain situation. For example, one can say that the incident on February 5th only led to the alienation of the boy from his father. One could also say that the incident which occurred on the 7th street was exemplary of extreme bravery.
What is the difference between accident and incident?
An accident is a negative event which indicates a personal harm whether physical or otherwise. Yet, an incident does not necessarily have to indicate negativity as incidents can be positive as well.
An accident is an occurrence that is unintended most of the time. It is something unexpected which takes an individual by surprise. Yet an incident is not so as incidents can occur at any time of the day or year and it would be classified as just another occurrence in day to day life.
The term incident is usually used with an adective attached to indicate whether that particular event was negative or positive. For example, one could refer to a car crash and would mention it as an unfortunate incident. One could use adjectives with the term accident as well and yet, it is unnecessary to do so as accident indicates a negative occurrence in any case.
