Difference between abuse and misuse

Abuse and Misuse:

Abuse and misuse are commonly used words which are seen to be used interchangeably in many contexts. Yet these words are more commonly used in terms of drugs and illegal substances where certain cases pertaining to drug abuse or misuse has proved to be fatal. Nevertheless, these two terms have different meanings and can be used on different contexts as well.

What is abuse?
Abuse can be used in many contexts with regards to various things. Abuse in a human rights sense could refer to cases such as child abuse where a child has been treated badly, physically injured as well as mentally corrupted. Abuse can also be used in a sense of using defamatory language with the aim of shaming an individual or hurting his or her feelings. Abuse can also be used in instances where certain drugs and illegal substances have been misused to the point of being unacceptable.

What is misuse?
Misuse too, like abuse can be used in many contexts with many meanings and connotations. Misuse in a general sense refers to the improper use of something which is perhaps meant to be used for another caue or reason. Misuse generally happens due to ignorance or lack of sufficient knowledge and can prove to be quite dangerous. For example, misusing of power can be quite frightening as well as dangerous. Drugs can be misused as well when they are being used for purposes other than the purpose that they were intended for originally. People can be misused as well if one contemplates on taking advantage of the vulnerability of another.

What is the difference between abuse and misuse?
Abuse can happen intentionally. One abuses power knowing full well what it can do and the uses that it has if used correctly. On the other hand, misuse occurs as a result of ignorance or the lack of sufficient knowledge where one is not aware of the uses of a certain drug and blindly takes it for an entirely a different purpose.

People can both be abused and misused. People can be abused verbally and physically, which will hurt them in a physical and a mental level. People can be misused when one intends to take advantage of a certain person’s weakness and use it for his or her own advantage. Also, abusing people can be sexually assaulting them as well whereas misusing people does not convey such a meaning.

Abuse of drugs on the other hand can be the repetitive use of a certain drug, fully knowing the effects that it harbors and also knowing the purpoe of it. However, misuse of drugs does not convey that one is fully aware of its effects. Misuse of drugs can occur as a result of ignorance as well.

One can misuse public property yet it is not heard of to abuse public property. misusing public property would be to use them in such a way that could be harmful to them, further making them unusable for others in the future. Therefore, abuse cannot be used in this context.

Summary

  • Misuse can occur because of ignorance of lack of sufficient knowledge.
  • Abuse occurs when one is fully aware of one’s actions and the effects that it will have on other people and other factors.
  • The definitions and uses of the two terms differ and vary largely accordin to the context in which they are used.
