What is an abridged marriage certificate?
The abridged marriage certificate is the certificate which is received by default once a couple gets married. It is printed by Home Affairs and certified by a registered marriage officer of the Department of Home affairs in South Africa. It contains personal details such as the full name and ID number as well as the date of the marriage, etc and is considered a valid marriage certificate in its true sense of the word. This would be enough validation for a couple of South African origin.
What is an unabridged marriage certificate?
An unabridged marriage certificate is what one would call a full and detailed marriage certificate and is required by a foreign couple who are not natives or citizens of South Africa. It is a more formal type of certificate which is considered as necessary if one has plans of travel, emigration, obtaining of a foreign passport, etc. it contains more details and it is a necessary document if one or both of the people getting married needs to register the marriage in their own respective countries as well.
What is the difference between the abridged and the unabridged marriage certificates?
The abridged certificate is the certificate which one would be presented in default which is signed and certified by a registered marriage officer of the Department of Home affairs in South Africa. And yet, one has to apply in order to obtain the unabridged marriage certificate. Also, while the abridged marriage certificate is a shorter one which includes only the most basic details such as the name, ID number, the date of the marriage, etc, the unabridged version is a much longer and a more fuller document which contains all the extensive details of the persons and the marriage.
Also, the unabridged certificate is required to be obtained by foreign couples whereas the unabridged certificate is valid enough certification for a native couple. The unabridged version of the marriage certificate in the more formal document which is accepted internationally whereas the abridged version is only valid within the country.
The unabridged marriage certificate is needed if the couple intends to apply for emigration, registering their marriage in their own respective countries or in applying for a foreign passport whereas an abridged marriage certificate is of no use in those procedures.
