Difference between Abraxane and Taxol
Abraxane vs Taxol:
As two chemotherapeutic drugs that are prescribed for the reduction of breast cancer cells, these two drugs Abraxane and Taxol have many similarities as well as several distinct differences. Thus, this article seeks to explore those differences which in turn will help one distinguish one drug fro the other in day to day life.
What is Abraxane?
Abraxane makes use of the human protein albumin together with pacitaxel which help deliver the due treatment to cancerous cells. Albumin creates an easier arena for this drug to attack the cancer cells because there exists receptors for this particular protein on the surface of the cells of the tumor which in turn helps the drug molecules to bind with them and start working effectively. The function of the drug is cutting off the SPARC protein which is needed by the tumor to grow.
Abraxane is an approved drug that is being prescribed to breast cancer patients all over the world. Abraxane contains no chemical solvents and therefore, it does not necessarily have side effects which needs to be treated with other drugs afterwards.
What is Taxol?
Taxol is a drug that is injected in to the body derived from plants which prevents the formation of microtubes in the cells. In addition to breast cancer it also treats other cancers in other parts of the body as well such as ovaries, bladder, lungs, etc.
Side effects such as loss of hair, low blood count, vomiting and diarrhea and hypersensitivity are common with the usage of this drug as it is an irritant and one must be careful in the administration of the drug. The amount of the drug that should be administered should be based on the patient’s body mass as well as the extent of the cancer as an excess of the drug can prove to have bad effect on the patient’s health. It contains chemical solvents which requires the patients to take medication which treats these side effects prior to the administration of Taxol.
What is the difference between Taxol and Abraxane?
While both drugs are chemotherapeutic drugs that are prescribed for the reduction of breast cancer cells, Taxol is used for the treatment other types of cancers in addition to the treatment of breast cancer. Also, Abraxane does not contain chemical solvents and yet Taxol does which leads to a myriad of side effects which can cause a lot of irritation to the patient as well as other drugs which treat the side effects caused by the drug. Abraxane does not cause such side effects and therefore, it does not need other drugs in addition either.
The administration of Abraxol takes up to thirty minutes whereas Taxol takes around three hours for the purpose. And also, Abraxane has proven to be more effective than Taxol because of the natural components included in the drug. Also, it has now been proven that the patients treated with Abraxane survive for a longer amount of time than those who had been administered with Taxol which contributes to the success rate of the drug. This may be because because of the fact that patients tend to respond better to Abraxane than to Taxol and yet, Taxol is considered to be the cheaper drug whereas Abraxane is much more expensive because of its higher cost of production.
