Difference between a kayak and a canoe
A kayak vs a canoe:
Knowing the difference between a kayak and a canoe may be of extreme use for water sport enthusiasts. Although the terms kayak and canoe are often confused and assumed to be the same, kayaks and canoes have distinct differences which set them apart.
What is a kayak?
A kayaks is of two types one of which is referred to as open top, which is also sometimes called sit-on-top. The other type is called enclosed hull boats. In both the types, the paddler is required to sit with their legs stretched in front of them and the paddling is done with the use of a double blade paddle which does not require flipping the peddle around to paddle on both sides. An enclosed boat sometimes has spray skirt attached which fits around the paddler’s waist and attaches itself to the opening of the hull. This serves as a watertight seal for the kayak which is of extreme use for situations when the waves or the spray may be quite harsh. Kayaks usually have well defined keel but some don’’t have keels at all. Therefore, a kayak with a keel is used for flat water which enables it to go straight with little effort whereas a kayak with no keel is ideal for quickly moving water as the absence of the keel enables the kayak to turn quickly. Kayaks are used by the Inuit and other northern tribes for open ocean hunting.
What is a canoe?
A canoe is also of two types of which one is referred to as a flat water boat and the other one is called a white water boat. It is the keel that distinguishes these two types. Whereas a flat water boat has a very distinguished keel on the bottom which helps tracking straight in the water, white water boats do not have a keel. And also, while flat water boats have flat bottoms, white water boats have curved bottoms which aids boat to turn quickly. Canoes are typically paddled with a single blade paddle with the paddler generally seated on his or her knees in the bottom of the boat. It is cautioned that the paddler should not sit on the sit as it causes the canoe to be unbalanced. Canoes were widely used by people all over the world from at least 10,000 years ago.
What is the difference between a kayak and a canoe?
Canoes are open boats and are much bulkier than kayaks while kayaks generally have closed tops which makes them more water resistant than a canoe. Also, while Kayaks are used by the Inuit and other northern tribes for open ocean hunting, Canoes were widely used by people all over the world from at least 10,000 years ago for fresh water excursions.
Whereas both boats can be paddled single or tandem, canoes can carry more than 2 people sometimes whereas a kayak is usually recommended for two people. Also, kayaks sit lower in the water, but have a lesser amount of boat touching the water which creates less “drag” and are therefore paddled with less effort than the canoes.
