Difference between a hawk and a falcon
A hawk vs a falcon:
Both the hawk and the falcon belong to a species of birds called accipitriformes or the falconiformes and both are known as birds of prey. And yet there are many differences that set these two majestic birds apart.
What is a hawk?
Hawks are of different types and often, the term hawk is used to refer to any of the species in the subfamily Accipitrinae which includes bird such as goshawks, sparrowhawks, the Sharp-shinned Hawk eagles, kites, harriers and buzzards and several others. These are woodland birds who possess long tails and a high visual acuity and their method of hunting can be described as quick descents from concealed perches and taking the pray by surprise. The term hawk can also be used to describe almost any bird of prey outside of the order Strigiformes who ar ealso known as owls.
What is a falcon?
A falcon can be defined as any species of raptor in the Genus Falco which consists of 37 species who are widely seen in areas such as Europe, Asia, and North America. A male falcon is traditionally known as a tercel and is one third smaller than the female. Capturing and training these birds has become a favorite hobby among many and the technique of doing so is referred to as falconry.
Falcons are known to posses thin tapered wings, which enable them to fly at high speed and to change direction rapidly. The Peregrine Falcons is said to be the fastest moving creature on earth as they are known to possess the diving at speeds of 200 miles per hour.
What is the difference between a hawk and a falcon?
The falcon belongs to the Genus Falco species who are characterized by their long wings and powerful beaks that are custom made for these birds of prey as their bodies are made for strong clawing and tearing the flesh of captured animals. A hawk on the other hand belongs to the the subfamily Accipitrinae which also consists of other sub species such as Accipiter, Micronisus, Melierax and Megatriorchis.
A falcon has a notch on their beak which they use for snapping the neck of their prey while the hawk’s beak has a simpler, smoother curve as it is their feet that they typically use to kill their prey. The feet of a hawk has talons on them to kill their prey.
Also, while falcons are speed hunters, hawks are ground hunters. Falcons have enormous speed and therefore, they like to pursue their pray, hunt and kill them by breaking their necks from their beaks while still in air. Hawks usually only attack animals that are on the ground. Once they see their prey, they swoop down and grab it with their feet.
Hawks are considered as the larger breed of birds and yet with shorter wings than that of a falcon.
